I think this one deserves a little frustration...
Avg (commenters): 1.0000
Normally I don't care about votes and who gives what... But they aren't even looking at the photo but rather the person who is in the photo...
Sure, I said in my description that I wouldn't be surprised by it but now that it has happened blatantly... It kinda irritates me..
Am I in the wrong for being frustrated? |

I think it was a nice shot personally. I am glad you put this in Rant because it is sure to political. Personally I always vote on the pic not the individual in the pic. I think that is wrong. I would have given this a good score even if it had been Obama...and I think he i the worst pres that we have ever had. Anyway that is my 2 cents

It's a good shot of the man, but didn't have any wow factor or strong personal appeal for me.

I reckon you entered it in the knowledge you'd get politically motivated 1's. But to be honest, you'd have been voted down for technical/composition reasons even if it was Jesus in the shot. |

If Ron Paul was ever elected, he would remove rant forums as an unnecessary expense. |

He has legs coming out of his head. *grin* So... it's a good photo, but not a great one... no matter the person.
I vote on the photo itself... not on how hard one had to work to get it... or of whom it is.
So... you look at this image as just an image and decide (apart from your personal hard work to get it) what it should score.

But Jesus was a Republican too, right?
On a scale of one to ten, I don't think either the technicals or the composition is worthy of a one. Maybe it's not Newsweek material, but all things considered, I think it's a pretty decent piece of photojournalism. If you* think Ron Paul deserves a one, take it to the polls. We're rating photographs here.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I know it wasn't that good of a shot, but a one? I've been around this website long enough to know that this is not a one...
Yes, I think what I got was about right... I thought it might have gotten just over a 5.0 so I was pretty close.
But what made it a one? This is just as good as any other political photo out there. Good smile, good framing, good exposure... Sure the background is a little crowded but that doesn't drop it to a one, does it?!
Whatever... I'm over it... It won't change, I was just frustrated when I found out that little tidbit...

I agree it is a MEH image but I think I still would have given it a 5

Exactly! I thought so too... I can even see a few 3's and 2's... But 1's? And 1's from the comments...
Maybe I am over reacting... |

My FS entry got a handful of 1's as well. I would also like to know what made it worth 1. On my scale, that means it is the worst photo it could possibly be. Awful crapola. However, I've learned there are often other reasons for those 1's. For example, there is one member (no names) who has a strong moral objection to anything that displays a gun or weapon and always gives a 1 for that. It has nothing to do with the quality of the image.

Don't feel bad about those two votes. They really speak for themselves along with the comments and therefore are not even worth getting upset about. It was not my favorite shot in this challenge, but I would have given it a 5, because it is a good shot... |

Yes, maybe, not really. One votes are frustrating and you think it is political, but you may well be wrong, at least on some of them.
You got 5; This got 7.
I thought it was fine, 7 people thought it was horrid. I thought yours was pretty fine too. |

You seem to be pleuralising the 1s. Of course, you may have just received one 1 and a non-voting comment... |

I've never even thought about that.. I guess I just assumed it was both!
My apologies! |

I'm one of your 1s.
* I'm not American and to me it is an image of some guy standing on a stage.
* You didn't light it
* You didn't get to a good angle to show his face better so it fails as a portrait.
* As far as I can tell anyone standing in your vicinity could have taken out a cameraphone/point&shoot and got the same image.
I personally appreciate an image where the photog has gone to some trouble to tell a story
I hope this helps you understand the scores and improve your photography. I do not know you or your subject so there was definitely no malicious intent. |

You cannot determine effort from the shot. I can show you many of my own entries that did well and were spur of the moment snaps, even one that was an accidental exposure. I guess some of that is learning over time to identify the scene with potential when it presents itself.

A valid point for sure. I was speaking generally, however there will always be exceptions. |

...and if time, effort, patience and such similar factors were indeed recognizable traits, then I do believe that this image of mine would have fared much better... ...but it didn't.
Each of us has differing voting criteria and patterns.

To have an end result of a 5, you must accept that your vote will consist of a distribution of votes, both lower and higher than 5. Distribution and all that.
And as for being as good as any other political photo... there are distinct differences between yours and the standard fare. Look at all the photos here.
Some notable things missing in yours that the majority of the others have:
head in a clean space
subject isolation from distracting elements nearby (especially other people)
eyes (even if they aren't looking at the camera, you can see them)
lower position than the speaker (increases the person's relative prominence)
emotional or powerful moment of the speech
Also it's important to point out that people have their own voting criteria which do not agree with yours, and the concept of a 1 to them may be completely different from yours. Obviously, you don't think it's worthy of a 1, since you entered it and you're not a brown chaser, but that's true of plenty of people who enter and which you may give low votes to. Why should such a disagreement in perception be any different or exceptional for you? |
