I just realized that we've inadvertently invented time travel. I can set my camera to whatever time I want to visit and take a picture of the future. |

While I appreciate your sensationalist comment... you know that it's not about that.
If we un-DQ this, blindjustice's shot would have to be un-DQd... so on and so forth. Rules are rigid, and I think the argument hangs over her "home" being listed as the world, and not Korea. |

I am firmly in Skip's camp on this one. We cannot start giving allowances for ever little individual mistake, and this was just that, a mistake. It is time to just shrug it off, learn from it, and move on. The Lake of Entitlement is a murky, dangerous place that is easy to drown in. Don't fall into it. |

I won't reveal my sources, but more than one DPC'er has used this trick to get photos for a challenge yet unannounced. Of course, by SC's logic, this is ok, since the EXIF says so. SMH. |

There will never be a way to stop cheating FULLY, but that doesn't mean the rules are wrong or need changing. They are pretty simple to follow, and "I don't have the time to deal with it" is not an excuse.

Of course, the rules do say "ensure that your camera date and time are correctly set to your home time zone before shooting your entry."
And I don't recall her having said she didn't have time to deal with it... I recall her saying that this was totally unexpected, and that she was keeping her camera on Korea time.
Big differences there IMO. |

Her documented home time zone is "none", or maybe all? But certainly not Korean time.
We're going in circles.

She said it, and quite frankly, if she feels the need to put "the earth" as opposed to making something a little more standard, that's still on her. Anything else are excuses for a mistake. Period. |

Good rules are flexible when they need to be. Stupid rules are applied rigidly. |

The request to reconsider the DQ has been received -- I think further argument in this thread will not advance either side.
It is likely that we will (soon?!) be updating the rules to make them more consistent, where the EXIF time-stamp will have to match the location of the photo; people traveling across time zones will have to reset their cameras to the local date/time. That may also make the location a required field ... |

Skip, my issue wasn't that you disagreed with me, plenty of other people on here did and that's fine. It was the condescending manner of which you expressed your disagreement that I found unnecessary and felt the need to point out.
Argue away everyone, do what you want but please focus on the rule and not judgements of my character about how I'm irresponsible or lazy or playing the victim. Those are all mean spirited assessments that have nothing to do with the rules.

spin it however you wish, monica. it's all in how you color it. "aw, crap, i got dq'd because i goofed up and read the rules differently" vs "aw, crap, i got dq'd because the rules are stupid"
anyway, better luck next time. hopefully the rules will be clarified so that they won't be misinterpreted... |

You gotta realize those mult-colored gifs are right up there with pulitzers, not to mention 8 scores are now given away like candy these days, soooo that's two reasons to cheat... I guess. |

Jeez.. I really don't even want to defend her here again, but really man? I see the argument as having nothing to do with either "aw, crap, i got dq'd because i goofed up and read the rules differently" or "aw, crap, i got dq'd because the rules are stupid"... I saw the issue as being "aw, crap - I got dq'd because I didn't specify my home on my profile" or maybe "aw, crap - I got dq'd because despite clear evidence, a 'NO EXCEPTIONS' clause was invoked."
I just don't see this as you do, not at all, hell I'm not even sure we've been reading the same thread here.
Every example given here of a similar situation has been more than a few hours off, this is a time-zone issue, not a year off, or a month or anything of the sort - the blasted camera was a few hours off - that's a far cry from a year off.
In the end, I think my biggest issue was that there was no discussion or questions asked - no chance to explain or defend - a simple message asking what time zone was "home" for her could have settled this without a thread ever having been created.

Honestly, this is getting interesting but......Monica was responsible for not setting the time on her camera.END OF STORY! She didn't think about it and most of the time most of us don't think about it. however with that being said and with her traveling so much it might be a good idea for her to check this. Figuring out what time zone your in while in Europe is pretty darn easy, most of it is in the same zone. The bigger issue for me and one that seems to have gotten lost in this whole thread is the issue of her being banned for multiple DQ's. I've looked at her profile and can find only the one for Smile. Shouldn't we be bothered by the fact that the SC has banned her from entering without any reason to do so? Now I'm sure it was an oversight by the Sc to do this, but it still is a little bothersome to me. |
