I think this is a pretty good example of fractals |

Maybe, but only because the center is split in half, with more layers inside them. In a perfect fractal, each of those two central splits should have splits inside them, and so on and so forth. |

We have been referring to the environment when it comes to fractals. What about man-made objects.. Would they be considered valid for this challenge too? |

I still think that the onion rings fulfil the conditions of fractals.. Similar patterns appear at progressively smaller scales |

it fits better than Hahn23's flower. :)

You'll have to convince me that its a fractal. By my working definition, I'm not sure it is. |

I'm pretty sure it isn't. While the flower itself may have fractal and/or fibonacci qualities, they are not the subject of the photo. To ace the challenge, IMO, the fractal qualities of the subject must be the obvious subject of the photo. |

Certainly, here's what I would consider a good example:

		| Wow, with all this discussion pre-voting about what does or what does not constitute an acceptable fractal image, I hesitate to even enter. Everyone seems so absolutely sure about what they will DNMC that it seems to leave very little wiggle room or even a chance for those images that are more creative and aren't 'slap you in the face' fractals. |

Yep I'm with you Pam... although I have decided to enter, I'm not a mathematician and I'm scared about whether or not my image is technically a fractal... |

Yes, very little wiggle room because of narrow mindedness, we are but a fractal of our world :) |

		More to read

And another with vertiginous mathematics. Scroll to the conclusion. . . I thought it was funny.

I tried to read. One would say: I can't read Chinese!

Well, I can read (some) Chinese but the links above made no sense for me. But I will try my best to enter the challenge. I'll go out, search, and if it's repeating or is a bunch of similar things that are seemingly repeating I will shoot it.

 Yee Hwa! I love math!

Heh. I ran into that one yesterday and was regretting that I have no plane trips in my immediate future! Some of those aerial shots are very cool. |

I like it. It's borderline fractal, but I think it's probably close enough, despite lacking evident order. |

In terms of fractals, I'd give this a 1 for DNMC. |
