I've done that many, many times over the years. I had a fair success rate with it at first, lately not much has happened. I think he's tired of me :-( |

Note that this has been done in the thread (if one gets started), and then everyone can get back to shooting, since there is nothing further possible to be done about it. It's not a magic formula ... |
Clearly, you're right. Of course, the perception is that anything sent to Langdon via an administrative ticket seems to go into a black hole, at least I feel that these threads are seen and heard, can't say the same for much of my administrative correspondence.
My question for you is this GeneralE, I see, and I think others do as well, a need for change, specifically more of a process surrounding this whole thing...
How do you think we should best approach that? My proposition would be one of three things:
1. Let SC or a trusted user(s) have a two hour window to serve as "sanity editors" before posting of challenges.
2. SC /whoever - should go through the proposed challenge set in a spreadsheet and create a set of carefully crafted choices for Langdon to slap up.
3. Langdon himself might be somehow encouraged to please more carefully consider the entire set of conditions that arise within any challenge and prep the challenge to suit the need.
...
You know this isn't a new issue, nor one that I (and many others) are getting frustrated about.
Just my $0.02..
ETA: I'm going to go send an administrative ticket, but frankly, and maybe I'm wrong here - wouldn't it be perhaps even more appropriate for a trusted team member (yes, you SC) to send these tickets to Langdon, given the fact that you are probably somewhat more removed and objective about the whole thing? Seems you guys are the trusted advisers to Langdon, and tickets from you on these matters should have somewhat greater influence. Or maybe I'm just crazy, cause all of you always seem to tell me that you don't have any special trust with Langdon when I ask questions like this.

For something like this, I don't think it makes any difference -- having it sent in sooner just means he has a chance to see it sooner, and I don't think this is a case where we would have any exceptional influence in the matter.
It might work if SC could be given limited access to edit the challenge for a few hours, but I don't think we could promise to always have someone monitoring the site right at rollover -- for example, I myself am trying to get to sleep since I always have to get up at 4am the next day, and I have the advantage of West Coast timing -- it's midnight where Langdon lives .... |

Its clear Langdon doesn't give a crap, so I just stopped giving him my money. Maybe if others did the same, change would happen, but I doubt it.
I'll go back to biting my tongue now. |

So, not a big deal, just make the "morning after" posting offical, as it already happens sometimes anyway, without major outcry might I add, and would give some extra time for you guys to massage the wording/editing status..
Or heck, post the challenge, let the thread have at the interpretation for a day, then figure out where the sticking points are and set the description to clarify.
Anything, something, whatever - it just needs some improvement. |

Grrrrh! I just realized this is a "basic" challenge :(
I really haven't been participating much of late at DPC but since I like architecture shooting thought I would give this one a whirl. So I shot something at lunch yesterday, liked the result, and then shot it again today on the chance that I could improve on it.
Just now I realized that despite Cory's suggestion the topic be "advanced" it is was made "basic" rules and what I shot has far too much dynamic range for one exposure. I could make it look "okay" with one exposure, but what is the point when I can make it look great with two or three?
I have other good ideas about what to shoot instead now that I know I need to tie one hand behind my back when processing, but they involve twilight conditions and rollover happens at just that time for me.
I can use what I shot elsewhere so my time spent wasn't a total waste, but it is such a shame I can't use it for DPC :( So.... again, why is it we STILL have frigging basic rules? :P

I totally feel you.... There was a small bruhaha over this, and several other challenge setups recently.
To be fair, I love basic, it's just not appropriate for this challenge, in fact it's about the worst possible choice for basic.
I can think of 100 challenge that would be awesome as basic...
I've called for Langdon to consider handing this off to someone else, but that went nowhere, and I expect to see much of the same for the foreseeable future.. |

Remember that the goal is NOT to produce the best possible picture, as if you were shooting for Archtectural Digest, it's to see who can produce the best picture under certain restrictions and conditions; that's why it's a "challenge" and not just a contest.
Sprinters can't run 110m in their fastest time when they put hurdles on the track ... |

A fence, on the other hand... will likely feel the wrath of DNMC. |
I assumed there'd be lots of duotones as soon as I saw the challenge. But then again, I didn't read the original suggestion, so I actually thought duotone when I first saw the challenge. It seems like a lot of the old architectural stuff seemed to be blue tinged b&w. And the challenge description doesn't seem to exclude that. Besides that, many people just don't have access to blue architecture.

Ok I'm going to get on my and give you my two worth...
Reading what's above, well not all of it b/c I really don't have the time, well I do but I can't be bothered...I can see why this has to be a basic editing challenge,.If it was adv then well you could alter any color building to look blue. In basic it stretches you to go the extra mile and look for that blue building, house, or whatever! It is what it is, and hey if there are NO blue buildings around where you live, hey just don't enter, I mean we don't have to enter every challenge that's posted.

I don't think I'm entering. There is ONE attractive blue building that I can think of in my city. To get far enough away from it to get it in the shot you end up with a dirty great power pole right smack in the middle of it. (It's a narrow building.)

Architectural details are a part of "architecture" -- I wouldn't think it necessary to include the whole building.

right. agreed. It's a little late to say it but I also think this might help those who think basic editing is an issue. |

After this I went and took some shots of that building, came home with 1/2 hour to spare - should be enough for basic, right? My camera and computer wouldn't talk to each other. So I didn't get anything in after all.
