I know a lot of people hate flower shots, but I had to try some. These were taken with the D70 kit lens. Comments?

Not a bad start, but I think that maybe, if you are trying to portray flower, that the first one you need to back off from the flower a bit. I think that it is an interesting photo (good by itself), but not if you are trying to say FLOWER... The second one, I think that there is too much space between the flowers, but I think that you are on the right track! I experiment, experiment, experiment, until I have something that hopefully portrays the message that I want to get across. I would like to see some more of the ones you took with this set, I LOVE flowers, and photographs of them. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the comments, Danielle & Thomas.

In response to your comment, Danielle. The first one is meant to be in that close, because it is a pseudo-macro shot. I say "pseudo" because I don't have the spectacular macro setup, like Jacko, and have to cheat.

To get mine, I just cropped out all but the center. Here is the original:

If you notice, I screwed up on the DOF, so the petals are too soft. Cropping down and making it a macro seemed like the only thing to do, to semi-save te shot.

Thanks for the comments.

I don't know why people around here hate flower shots so much...I LOVE them! I have taken a lot of flower pictures in my short stint as a photography hobbyist. I think you are off to a good start. I love the color, and the flowers you have chosen are great subjects. I like the daffodil photo, but I wish there was one whole flower instead of parts of two...but I agree with Danielle's comment about the leaf in between the two. Take as many flower pictures as you want. Post 'em on here and you know at least I will look at them. The tulip photos are also nice. I agree that you should maybe back out a bit. You just have fun with them. I can't wait until all this rain stops, because my neighbor's baby blue irises are blooming and I can't wait to sneak in her yard to photograph them. Flower haters, beware...I'm coming back with pictures!

Here's an Iris just for the flower lovers everywhere...it's not a technical masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but darn it, it was a pretty flower. Why not take a picture!

I really like them, too! Here is my rose:

Here's another...

BTW, I love those purple irises! I have some in my backyard, they are a little more on the blue purple side, I will have to dig up my photos... Don't they smell WONDERFUL!! :)

BTW, If I had known that you liked flowers so much, I would have sent you a flower postcard...

My wife loves plants of all kinds, and is a watercolor artist, so I get asked to shoot flowers and plants quite often. I think that lots of people don't like "flower pictures" because it's so hard to do something different -- which is sometimes equated with creative -- with them.

The appeal of shooting flowers is hard to resist, especially when you're a beginner -- the colors, the lines, the tones -- are all so spectacular. I guess that's why there is a lot of technically poor plant photos out there.

I don't really have any advice about it tho.

Danielle I like your flowers but think I like the original better
If we don't take any shots that people don't want to see here there won't be much left to take because there is a long list of things of things someone is tired of.
Thanks everyone for the flower pictures. Yes I'm a flower lover

"Original"?? What do you mean by this? Do you mean cbeller's first photo? I like it too, I just thought that it didn't scream flower (if that is what cbeller was going for). I think it all depends on what you are going for...Don't get me wrong, I definately like creativity shots, and think that flowers are definately overplayed, if no creativity is put into them. And, I am not saying that my shots are anywhere near perfect! Far from it, I am an amateur, and I was just giving my "from the gut" opinion... (Maybe I should keep my mouth shut, from now on...)

I like this one because your composition has made it "more" than a flower shot, with strong and distinct nested geometric shapes in highly contrasting colors (I like abstracts).

This might be a case where the shallow DOF you get with better cameras is not so advantageous, since as a geometric abstract it might be better with it all in focus. But the shallow DOF works if what you're trying to emphasize is "the essential flower," by having only the actual reproductive organs in focus.

My camera is not very good at macros, so I tend to get more ordinary flower shots, like this blue iris I shot yesterday evening.

Hey Paul,
Did you notice the red tones that crept in around the iris in the edited verision? They are not visible in the unedited verison...

Nope ... my eyes have a diminished sensitivity to red tones, especially when a component of another color (e.g. purple). Is it objectionable or so odd I should fix it?

Yeh, you should definitiely fix it. It's very pronounced. I thought you might not have been able to distinguish it.

Thanks -- I'll have to work on it later.

never could i hate flower photos...they capture a beauty that fades all too quickly.

this is mine from a couple of days ago.

I like flower shots too but, because they can be somewhat prevalent, I do think they need to be a little special if they are to successfully catch someone's attention.

Capturing the WOW factor is hard in flower shots.

I haven't succeeded yet but here are a couple of older ones of mine from my film SLR.
