Getting antsy now, hoping to get a sell on craigslist today. Only problem is that everyone else seems to have the same idea and mix that with school ending, well, I picked the worst time to sell. Would love to get that retina MacBook Pro, drooled all over it at the Apple store last night.

Just wanted to let peeps know - and I didn't want to start a whole new thread!

I just got the samsung 256gb sata3 SSD from amazon along with the optical disk enclosure and this evening will be doing surgery on my MBP. I'll be putting the SSD as the system drive along with my aperture libraries on it, my old 500gb drive for everything else including iTunes, and moving the dvd drive into the included external box (i've used it maybe twice since i bought the computer more than a year ago). if my calculations are correct I should achieve the speed of the brand new retina macbook pro.

Here's hoping!!!

Best of luck, and please let us know how the surgery goes. I am planning on doing the same with my almost new MBP. I considered selling it and getting a Retina model, mostly for the USB3 and multiple Thunderbolt connections as compact TB external HDs are just not coming to market with TB passthroughs (idiots!). But I really mostly use an external display and don't care for the glossy display as the only option in a Retina model right now. So swapping out the optical drive seems a great solution for getting my entire library self contained and easily portable. I have the last build of the old model too with 16GB of RAM, so it will be almost as fast as a Retina model.

Ok so post surgery:

The installation of the SSD, the substitution of the old HDD and the DVD, and the removal of the DVD all went perfectly apart from two extremely stubborn screws holding the bluetooth piece. I followed the ifixit app on the iPad (a live savor i must say!)

I then reformatted the SSD using the recovery partition that lion automatically created on the old HDD, and then installed lion (yes a re-download as I didn't make the USB key like i'd wanted). That went very smoothly and when it was finished I then formatted the old HDD.

At this point I had a clean Lion installation on the 256 GB SSD and 500GB free on the old (7200rpm) HDD. I used Migration Assistant to bring over all my files (and Aperture Libraries) EXCEPT my iTunes library to the SSD, and manually copied the Music folder from within Time Machine.

So basically I've got the best of both worlds... Lots of space for music, TV, film etc on the old HDD and a super fast SSD to use for everything else.

Spent about €250, and my "new" computer boots in 13 seconds and so far has a geekbench score of 11,300 though i haven't had time to play with the settings.

If anybody has questions on the process or is interested in doing something similar don't hesitate to ask questions!

PS. I activated the trim support on the new SSD using a few easy terminal commands.

Mountain Lion is released today //www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18978166

Anybody taken the plunge yet?

P.S. Love this random line at the bottom of that BBC article: "By contrast Microsoft is charging $39.99 for a Windows 8 upgrade, while Linux-based systems, such as Ubuntu and Debian, can be downloaded for free."

Just installed Mountain Lion yesterday evening, after about an hour of use I would say that it totally rocks... it's like the difference between Leopard and Snow Leopard. Everything's faster, the animations finally work, full screen on the apps works much better, notification center works pretty well (the idea's not original but it's done better than Growl was) Absolutely worth the upgrade. The new Safari is much faster as well.

Yep,I just installed it and it works a treat for me too.

Faster and smoother.

I'll try to d/l it later today, but I'm not sure my hardware is supported.

I had no issues doing the Mountain Lion upgrade to a late 2011 MacBook Pro, 2009 Mac Mini, and even my 2007 MacBook Pro squeaked in there as being supported- yes! All seems fine and zippy. Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4 seem fine, haven't tried any plug-ins yet.

*Christopher, thanks for reporting you MacBook Pro hardware upgrade success. I still hope to do this to mine as well. I am assuming how to set up TRIM will be an easy thing to search for, though it seems that maybe some of the SSD manufacturers have companion apps that can be installed to maintain drive health (not sure which would be the best solution yet). Hoping as I drag my feet doing this upgrade SSD prices drop a little further :)

I'll probably upgrade as well later, all seems to be positive experiences out there (apart from issues actually getting the download because of overloaded servers)

It's funny, this upgrade isn't like something I desperately need; there are no features in there I can't live without. And it might run faster, but it's not like my mac is running too slow or anything like that.

The power of marketing, I suppose. And where can you go wrong for $20? lol
07/26/2012 10:55:38 AM · #62
Yeah, what would we do with all this money if it wasn't for upgrades.

Spend it on games in the app store.

Here's what I don't quite understand: Are all these feline updates just new releases of the same OS? 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 etc? Does Apple ever release a new OS in the sense of OS XI? When was OS IX around? I don't keep up on these things and just yesterday learned these are incremental upgrades rather than whole new operating systems.

But you don't have to worry, the price for the OS is found in the profit margin of the hardware. ;)

It's all part of the 'Mac OS' family. There was System 1-7, followed by Mac OS 8-9, and we're now on OS 10 (OSX) - with its various point releases. //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS

They probably don't want to release OS 11 (OS XI) because OSX sounds cooler...

It does sound cooler. Like I said, it actually took me until yesterday to realize the X even stood for 10. :)

Just upgraded to Mountain Lion, but now I can't upload a file to dpchallenge. Upgraded flash also. Is anyone else having this problem?

Rebooted and still can't upload. I should be more specific...I am trying to upload a challenge entry.

If you are using the Safari browser, that might be the problem. My last entry I could not get to upload from Safari (uploader was unresponsive) and had to upload with my iPad from a Dropbox drive- only to upload the wrong edit and have to go with that as I ran out of time. Grrrh!
I put in a support request and Langdon got back to me suggesting I install the Chrome browser as it plays better with the DPC uploader. I did and it does. It would be nice if the DPC uploader worked well under Safari too though...

ETA- I should add that the uploader worked intermittently the last few month using Safari. Problem is, it can really burn you if you develop a problem close to rollover time- so an alternate browser might be key for now.

I'm using Safari. It worked fine before the Mountain Lion upgrade. I seem to remember this problem happened with the original lion upgrade and had to be fixed by Langdon. Good suggestion to try Chrome or use the ipad.

I just checked Michael and the DPC uploader seems functional for me using Safari since upgrading to Mountain Lion. Sweet, but the functionality seems to come and go (may have to do with Flash versions). Probably best to have a backup browser solution and Langdon I know seems to like Chrome :)

I did and everything seems working fine. Mail, Chrome, Safari, Notification, Parallals with XP. Xcode for iphone/ipad development. didn't face any issue so far :)

Loading mine now, kind of looking forward to it but not sure why because I just got my apple (27"s of pure joy) about 10 days ago so not sure I will really know the difference but hey I love new things....

Thanks. Downloaded Chrome and it works! Safari still doesn't work, and it kinda bugs me.
