I think you have to read beyond the tittle of the challenge and read the details.

Imagine that it is a photo editor that has given you this assignment. Now imagine what he will say if you turn in a photo that in no way shows a village, town or city. If I were the editor I might be a little disappointed having thought the assignment was clear. I can not speak for anyone but myself in this but I donĂ¢€™t believe it is that much of a hardship to meet the sprite of the challenge, even if this means driving 10 miles to get to the nearest town.

As to how many houses? That is not really the point. The point is that in someway you should be able to look at the photo and tell that it relates to a village, town or city, that it shows some aspect of it.

Again I donĂ¢€™t speak for anyone but myself but for me if the only link to the challenge is the tittle of the photo I donĂ¢€™t believe that photo is meeting the challenge.

You are amazing!Challenge name is "where you live"!Some people live on the farm ,ranch and some in Honolulu and drive Lexus.
That is why the title of the challenge doesn't match the small print!

Example : Itasca Downtown

How many houses do you see?

For me I would say that if there is a discrepancy between the challenge tittle and the details the details would take precedence. This would seem to make sense since the details are meant to clarify what the challenge is looking for.

No dwellings in my shot. Anyways I don't think a modern subdivision would look very good in a tourist guide.

I'm just hoping there are no shots of excrement for this challenge

Maybe I should scrap my shot of the local sewage treatment plant then.

As far as I'm concerned, as little as a pathway can signify a town or village. Having usually lived in or around small, rural towns, a "town" - or at least its city limits, many "towns" never really *have* central areas - can be spread out over a large space with little more than dirt roads connecting it. There's nothing in the title OR the details stating that buildings, much less multiple buildings, are necessary.

My town is made up more of trees than buildings. What would you have people do, go somewhere else and take photos and pretend to live there? How is that in the spirit of the challenge?

I hope people consider these things when voting. Personally, I think it'll be fun to look at the diversity of where DPCers live.

At first reading the challenge details I did think that most people would include some sort of a dwelling.

On reading it a second time and thinking about the kind of shots that are in a guidebook, I don't think buildings should be necessary either.

and pitsaman, I do live in the woods ;) I can't even get cable tv at my house, and can only check the messages on my cell phone if I stand in my yard and lean the right way.

Edit for spelling.

Show us your village, town, or city from a new perspective Since we usually see downtown areas seems as if they want us to show something different from what is usually used in guide books and etc.IMHO
