Terrific! I owe Slippy a drink! And I won't spit in it this time. |
You're asking someone else to spit in Slippy's drink? Well, well |

Vote the image on its merits as you see them by all means, but do not presume to conclude that your inability to see the connection with the challenge theme is automatically an indictment of the photographer. Itâs much more likely an indictment of you.
Your opinion about that is subjective, and ultimately irrelevant, as well as almost certainly insulting. |
We as the viewer may not "see" what the artist had in mind and we can decide for ourselves what the piece means to us.
After all

I'll be happy to send you (or the teacher) a small print of this ... I'm not sure but I think there's probably some purple in there somewhere ... :-)

Maybe we should have a side challenge of shots to show the teacher.

Enough people vote on every challenge that it doesn't matter what an individual feels, if your entry clearly meets the challenge criteria it will get voted on accordingly. If you aren't sure if your entry meets the criteria many of the voters won't either, and if you enter a shoehorn you will get more 10's than most other entries and end up without the brown. I think that's pretty much how it works. Oh, and if your entry is just an awesome image it doesn't matter if you follow the criteria, you'll ribbon anyway. |

Well, then, I want my money back! Most of my images are awesome! Most of them don't have a ribbon either. Poor things. They're gonna develop a complex... |

So many glib comments of, âDNMCâ or, âSorry, I donât see the connectionâ.
So many threads about, âWould it still be Candid if the person glanced at me?â or, âIs it still a Still Life if the dead fish is still breathing a little?â
To pronounce someone elseâs photograph as DNMC is absurd and presumptuous. An inexcusable, myopic vanity. How can you know what was in the photographerâs mind? Itâs impossible.
Vote the image on its merits as you see them by all means, but do not presume to conclude that your inability to see the connection with the challenge theme is automatically an indictment of the photographer. Itâs much more likely an indictment of you.
When you see an image that doesnât fit with your personal view of the challenge, donât dismiss it. Instead embrace it; itâs probably a rare and precious opportunity to expand your horizons. Then, if still takes you nowhere, give the thing a 3 vote with a clear conscience: you donât see the connection (though that doesnât mean there is none). But just donât say âDNMCâ. Your opinion about that is subjective, and ultimately irrelevant, as well as almost certainly insulting. |
I had to search on the topic of DNMC challenge after one more pass through of voting and finding numerous pictures of flowers and sunsets again. I am new to this community, so was wondering where the community is on this topic.
Such rich dialog. This was a great thread to read through!
I have to say though, I am starting to get annoyed looking at photos that just seem lazy to me. Treating every challenge like a free study and just shoehorn a title that tries to bridge the gap. Or go the diametric opposite of the spirit of the challenge - you're just being ironic, right?
That said, I love to see someone push the meaning or try to evoke the challenge in a unique way. But I am just one voter anyway. My opinion matters very little. |

'Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a shoehorn with which
to shape it.â - Bertolt Brecht
I don't see how anyone can argue with Bertolt Brecht. He wrote one of the greatest musicals (Grease) that was ever written. |

I admire one comment not long ago "I gave you 2 because this image DNMC". Anyway, I witdrew that entry not due of dnmc vote but other matter.
Well, I stick to the point that casting the vote should be based on the execution of the shot, idea, story, message, mood, style, composition, lighting, colors, technical quality and effects. Do the expressions fit the photo, original, genuine and how does it compare to others. The most important, how do we understand what the photographer wants to say with the photo.

True, but even a shoehorn is designed to fit something into a molded entity. :O)

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down âhappyâ. They told me I didnât understand the assignment, and I told them they didnât understand life!!!!
That just about sums up this whole thread for me

Even the most open mind can't think a colour image in a B&W challenge somehow meets the brief? That said surely DNMC should always be suffixed by 'IMHO'? Am guessing that is always implied anyway? |
