Uhm, seeing that today is my 6th anniversary of joining this wonderful site, mind if I put in a couple of words? Let me preface this by saying that I am not trying to put anyone down, but I really doubt most people here have the balls to say what I'm going to say. So I'll do it.
I joined not with any intention at all of ever ribboning, but because the images I saw were so mind-blowing to me at the time, and they were being taken by regular people. Sure, I was shown staggering images like DoomWatch. As anyone can see, I've truly come a helluva long way since 2006. But I learned.
This site always struck me and still does as a fun, competitive site where you can and do learn so much from being here. I can post a question on anything photography, and get excellent responses that help me with my work.
As for the voting and ribbons...let's face it. Very few people have a style (in terms of both photography and pp skills) that is both completely natural to them and DPC friendly. If I actually bothered to sit down and learn PS CS5 inside and out, and chose to cater only to the DPC vox populi and sacrificed my own vision in the process, then I'm sure I could win a whole lot of ribbons.
However, I've chosen to stay true to my vision through the lens of the D90, and my PS skills develop at a snaillike pace. However I've ribboned twice, whether despite or because of my seditious vision, which was fostered in large part by Team Suck.
But the point is. I ribboned on MY terms, not DPC's. And that's what makes it so much the sweeter, knowing that I did not sell out to please DPC. |

There is nothing wrong with Margaret getting excited about getting close to the top 50. If that's her goal, why can't we cheer her on? If it's not your goal, what does it hurt to try to understand that she's getting close to something that's important to her?
And why does "selling out" always come into play?
Take a look at the top 10:
IreneM with 71 ribbons.
gyaban with 59 ribbons.
scalvert with 54 ribbons.
Judi with 51 ribbons.
AllenP with 49 ribbons.
h2 with 49 ribbons.
timfythetoo with 46 ribbons.
vawendy with 41 ribbons.
DrAchoo with 40 ribbons.
njsabs with 38 ribbons.
Do you think these people sold out, or do you think the did what they loved doing -- and just happened to be good at it, and that their work resonated with a large group of people? There's a wide variety of photography types here. Is this wrong?
Why isn't it possible that Margaret has found something that she loves doing, and has developed a skill for it. And if you approach a big goal -- and top 50 is a big goal -- why not try to share it with friends?

Congrats Margaret, I see nothing wrong with setting a goal for yourself and doing what it takes to achieve it. I personally don't see the point in putting someone down because they are excited with an achievement. That is sort of like putting someone down because they started a thread about a photo getting published somewhere. We should congratulate each others achievements no matter if they are our own aspirations or not.
We all have different goals on this site and those goals change from time to time. Personally I am pursuing other directions at the moment. Winning ribbons isn't a goal or a priority anymore. I still enter challenges from time to time just for the fun of it. But just because that isn't my goal doesn't mean I am going to chastise someone who does have that goal.
BTW: Saying that getting ribbons is easy now is insulting. I think it harder than ever to get a good score, and I would love to see some of those ribbon winners from a few years ago go up against Wendy, Judi, or Gyaban or Jagar and see how they do. |

I'd love to see a fantasy team. It's too bad I never saw a master's freestudy. That would be so cool.

I was so excited to pass Kiwiness for #1 on the ribbon list years ago, and couldn't understand why the top hogs didn't even bother entering challenges to try and hold me off. Now I do. |

I'm still coming after you!! And I appreciate the fact that you're not entering so I stand a chance. :) |

@ vawendy and sjhuls...I am not belittling Margaret or her accomplishments or goals, though I and a few others don't care much for her bragging about it. And yes, I stand firm by the fact that anyone with the drive and desire to ribbon here, could easily do so.
So now my big goal now is to whup gyaban in an Expert Editing challenge...
*waiting for laughter to die down*
But seeing that I've already bested the mighty Christophe in an Advanced challenge, I figure now that it's just a matter of time ;-) |

Sorry snaffles but when you use the term "selling out" you are belittling, whether you think so or not.
And not everyone is here to learn or form friendships. I like entering photo contests. I enter a lot of "photo-of-the-day" contests, some of which I win. I started here because to me it was another photo competition. I love winning ribbons, I love that I'm in the top 50 list (still can't believe I am!) and I love entering photos that I think have a chance of winning. If this were just a "share your photos site" I doubt I would be here. I like the competition aspect of it. In fact I can't understand why anyone would enter a competition if they didn't want to win. And if you say it's for the experience, well, you can just add your photos to a portfolio and get experience that way.
scalvert I agree with you - so many of the prople who used to win ribbons all the time aren't here anymore. Is it because their photos were put down by the very vocal minority? Ugh, not another water drop. Ugh, not another wine glass. Ugh, not another stunning landscape. Ugh, not another foggy mountain shot. Ugh, not another flower. Ugh, not another set-up shot. Ugh, not the northern lights again. |

Oh! How sweet of you to mention that, Deb! I hadn't realized it before.
I think it's because every time I go to that link ... I'm so in shock that I see my name... in any place there...
Margaret, GO, girl!! GO!! "Shoot" for your dream! (Yeah... silly pun... but ... really... SHOOT for it!)
It wasn't that long ago that I was looking at my first "ribbon score" and thinking my eyes had deceived me... over and over I looked, blinking over and over again.
Ribbons.
Such FUN! :D
Go, Margaret!! I'm cheering you on.

Oh, and how the hell is Margaret's saying that she only needs 2 more ribbons to make the top 50 list any more bragging than someone who comes on here and "brags" about getting a magazine cover shot or winning a Flickr photo contest or getting their photo on a billboard? I didn't see anyone belittling those people when they announced their photographic accomplishments!
Methinks there's a little jealousy on the go but you're afraid to admit it. |

Its not the winning that people, like me, at the bottom of the food chain don't like. It's being abrasive and self absorbed and oblivious, apparently, that gets difficult to handle.
Sometimes I step back a bit and realize that the tone I put forward in a thread or a particular forum was a bit too negative, confrontational, perhaps even now.
The one thing that makes a superhero a super, is humility,it's the fact that if you ask him if he is a superhero, he answers "no." |

Here's the thing, most of us are not trying to brag or be unhumble(is that even a word???) It's just not very many people in our lives understand the excitement of winning a virtual ribbon or being two ribbons away from making the top 50. You should have heard me trying to explain my excitement to my friends and family when I got an 8.0 on a challenge. They all stared at me like I was crazy as I tried to explain the voting system and why an 8 is good. When something like that happens you want to jump up and down and celebrate with people who really understand how exciting it really is. If we can't get excited on these forums with people who should understand our excitement instead of making us feel ashamed of it then where do we go?
Sorry but all of you who don't have anything nice to say in this type of thread shouldn't say anything at all. In all reality who does it hurt if someone does a bit of bragging? Nobody! Who does it hurt when you complain about someone getting excited about their accomplishments? Apparently quite a few people. |

Don't have anything nice to say? Read the whole thread. I have plenty of respect for people who are amazing photographers, but more respect for those who are humble, and don't start threads about their accomplishments,
And then condescend and say "only those at the top are my people- only they will understand."
Ha!-
So as not to hijack the thread, I do like your photography Margaret, and if you wish, I hope you win many more ribbons.

I think you are misinterpreting both of our statements. You have that in quotes and that is not even close to what she said. And the last part of my comment wasn't directed at you specifically.
Also when you win your first ribbon and I'm sure you will, be sure to remember your own words.
