I guess this guy really likes his photography

I would imagine that if ANYONE were being attacked and you were the closest person to help, photography would take a back seat...but I guess this husband felt differently.

On that note, I wondered if anyone else has been to these petting zoos with wild animals? I can remember a friend of a friend being in an enclosure with tigers/lions and saying that none of them were drugged to keep them calm...so what does keep them calm? I'm a big guy but I doubt you could get me in the same room as a big cat unless it were unconscious. Does anyone have any experience?

The newspaper here had a similar caption (with the same shot) and created the same impression, but then towards the end of the article said in a half sentence that he was taking pictures of something else and didn't even notice the incident. So who knows what really happened, but like that it sure attracts more attention (cruel husband bla, bla, bla).

Bad news is good news, and good news is bad news. News(papers, media) is not always reliable.

Way back in the early 80s I attend the Ex in Ottawa, and there was a guy with a pet puma - it had been born on a waterbed, handled by people its whole life etc. For $5 you could get a Polaroid taken of you with the cat. It was laying on a large carpet-covered bench in a small booth, and the guy walked you down there to the bench, sat you down and you petted the puma while he got the shot. I remember how short and coarse its fur was. I don't recall seeing a chain on it but pretty sure there was a collar on it.

Around that time a lot of businesses used big cats to promote their wares, so there'd be a caged lion or tiger in a car dealership for example.

ETA: The terms 'petting zoos' and 'wild animals' don't really go together. That's a giant lawsuit waiting to happen. And most petting zoos are stocked with goats, llamas, sheep, deer, and barnyard fowl. And was your FOAF actually alone in the enclosure with the big cats?! When and where did that take place, some dicey roadside zoo? If he was in there with the cats' handler he may have been fine, but on his own...well...:-/

I think him taking photos was sensible he would have made things worse by rushing to her aid, the place cannot deny the incident as there are photos, they also have a record for any claims which need to be made ! I believe she wasn't badly hurt as she has carried on with her holiday according to our papers. Most of the animals used in this type of situation are young and hand reared.

This sort of incident happens so quickly that there is not really much time to react, let alone think about what to do. I'm guessing that the whole incident was only 3 or 4 seconds.
Even if he were inside the enclosure, it may have been best for him to not jump into the activity and excite the cats more than they already were. My guess is that he was outside the enclosure.

I know more than a few guys who would cheer for the cheetah, why not take pictures to commemorate the event.

My Best of 2011 is a perfect example of shit happening, nothing can be done to stop or prevent it, and I was already there prepared to shoot what was *supposed* to be happening. So I just kept on shooting. I didn't post it up with the other shots from that day but when the girl in the pic came by to get prints of shots I took prior to the horse's blowup, I mentioned that I had shots of the rear too. She not only loved the pic but got an 8x10 of it too :-)
