I'm wondering what the opinions are here...

So I recently bought a collapsible backdrop so I can bring it around to take photos at my students houses (I teach private English during the week). Buying 'Made in Japan' products comes with a heavy price. So, I bought something cheaper from Korea. When I received it it wasn't 'pure' white or black. It was dirty (I posted about it in another thread).

I kept in touch with the maker and in the end decided to send it back. He asked me to ship it the cheapest way back but because of the odd shape it still cost me 40 bucks to return. An extra 5 bucks and I could express ship it and have a tracking number. It says in their return policy that there are no refunds on shipping...I'm not sure if this applies to the shipping I paid to have them ship it to me or if this also includes the shipping back to them for a replacement. The item was originally about 40 dollars...so now I feel like I've spent double what I should have.

I don't know what the seller plans to do as I just shipped it. I may have to start buying 'Made in Japan' products. Add to this I have to send my 'still under warranty' HD back to Singapore via FedEx...I don't know what they are going to charge.

So I guess my question is, if the item sold does not meet the description, should the return shipping payment of the item for a replacement be the buyers responsibility or the sellers? Had the seller checked the item and seen the mess all of this could have been avoided. But, being a biggish company I would assume that it's all automated. Still hoping for the best.

i have always thought it should be the seller's responsibility and that any seller should include any costs for return shipping in their overhead.

however that said return policies are often provided as an incentive not as a requirement so its on you to find a good a one. everyone has different return policies, amazon for instance bases their return policy on the circumstance, sometime its free (when the item is damaged or not as described) and other times not (like when you dont like something). in your case he seller sent you marked up goods and it not that you didn't like it, but that it was marked up and dirty.

when shipping costs that much you should have just kept it, no point in paying twice for it. the seller made out with no real loss and you did.
