Does anyone else out there run in Vibrem Fivefinger shoes? |

No, I tried them, but didn't like them. Unless your feet are shaped like the shoe they aren't fun. |

I can't even wear flip flops, those five finger things would be like torture for me. |

i have seen them, i wanted to try them to see if maybe running in them wouldn't hurt my knees so much, since your stride is different is less impactful on the knees (or so they say)
but then i remembered how much i hate running. |

My son does, and his times are better with them.
I don't run from anyone or anything.... As long as I have a car.... |

I have them and I have run in them. Like a little piece of heaven until you run on a pointy rock... then not so much. They do offer some protection, but not as much as a normal shoe. I do like them very much and they are perfect for running on a track or smooth surface.
You should know that they do make my fet smell like a 50 gallon drum of freeze dried cow dung... |

If you intend to do any trail running with them, it takes a long time for your feet to toughen sufficiently to use those shoes on the same terrain/distance. Some people do love them, but I was never sold on how they fit my foot, since every time I step the shoe sorta folds on the side, which I thought would be murder while running. I've still been toying with getting a pair for wading in rivers/fishing since I think they'd be great for that. There are other minimalist options out there though. My girlfriend runs in Merrels and loves them. She uses the for trailrunning, as well as half marathons. A lot of folks also like the Nike Free shoes. |

I have a pair and I like them. It does seem to make running easier but it has taken my foot awhile to get tough and my calfs...OUCH! but now I am getting used to them. I just wondered what someone elses experiance was like. |

The sore calves are typical for any minimalist shoe since you're forced to use your calf to decelerate instead of the cushioning of the heel, but it will get better over time. |

I've never been a fan of the minimalist movement. I've tried to find research in the scientific community to back up the claims of Vibram and nothing comes up. Reed Ferber from the University of Calgary and head of the Running Injury Clinic hasn't decided which side he's on yet, one of the worlds leading experts on the biomechanics of running, so I'll caution and stick with what I currently wear. I run around 140km (90 miles) a week, therefore changing shoes which lead to any amount of discomfort I tend to shy away from, especially if there is no definitive proof any benefit will come of it.
That's at least my take on the Vibram's.

I'm pretty sure you guys are talking about VIBRAMS? Not "Vibrems" or "Vikrams"?

I've thought about it, but I haven't wanted to take the time to properly train into them. I don't think it's a good idea to go from a regular running shoe straight to a barefoot type shoe without basically relearning how to run.
I started to read Born to Run, but I was unimpressed with the veracity of some of what he said (that I was knowledgeable about) and so it made me suspect the things he said that I wasn't knowledgeable about. |
