Have I played with them? No, but I keep pretty careful tabs on this sort of thing.
Will it completely replace PW's?
Yes and no, depends upon your needs. So far as being a radio trigger, sure, they do that, and sure, they do control power remotely, which is awesome. However, the range is still less than the PW's (though should be adequate for most situations).
You need one transmitter on camera and then as many of the 600's as you want. The transmitter on camera can either be a 600 or it can be the dedicated transmitter (ST-E3-RT). They MUST be the 600 to use radio, none of the older flashes have the radio capability, nor do they have optical dumb slaves, though you could look into adding optical slaves on your own. However, the 600 WILL also trigger older flashes using the standard Canon system, ALA just like how the 580 can function as commander on camera. The dedicated transmitter (ST-E3-RT) cannot fire an older flash no matter what you do.
Some good info can be found from Syl Arena who got some early- here and here. He also has great off camera lighting info in general, but ESPECIALLY for anybody using the Canon flash system. |
