ive got non in voting at mo through being crazy busy with work after no work for two months and doing shoots outside of dpc but my last few entrees were not received as i'd hoped so was looking for some pointers
rip into me ppl either comment on here or on the images, honesty welcomed even if scything and scornful :) hehe

this was a genuine not looking shot, i guess i should have done like others composed the shot then closed my eyes and fired, but went with the spirit and got hammered, i left the wing mirror to convey the fact it was snapped out the window as i drove.

i thought this was a solid 6, nicely lit, crisp and it fitted the collection theme

im guessing ppl hammered this for corners, but weve seen completely unrelated to challenge photos win so why is it selective.

ok, you asked for it :) I'll admit when i saw many of these the first time i just passed them over as nothing grabbed my interest. on a second look i tried to find how you could have grabbed my interest.
the first one is very uninteresting, the horizon is dead center and so is the road. maybe a better composition could fix it up. more sky or less sky or crop off more of the right side?
the second image is very dark and the foreground appears improperly exposed. there is also nothing interesting about this either. there is a distracting contrail by the sun, and this image also screams for a lens flare that doesn't appear to exist.
the third looks like a picture of a book of stamps. maybe there is too much going on, but you didn't really capture or convey any essence of stamp collecting.
the fourth doesn't excite me either. nice looking model, but i dont like the lighting, the background is too dark as is the top of her head, it all kind of blends together. its lacks a particular sharpness that i have come to expect from seeing such shots. plus it really dont fit the challenge. yes she is in the corner, but is she really? she is more to the side of the image. to top it off the title doesn't seem to fit with the image. i dont get any sense of rejection from the image.

I'd simply like to point out that top 20% is NOT "bad". |

Naw -- you don't have to be happy with it, because it could have been done better. The road is wonderful. I'm not crazy about the horizon in the middle, but I can live with that :)
However, the photo is really flat. It needs some life. This is a quick, bad edit, but hopefully you get the idea:
There's just a lot in the foreground and background that you can pull out. |

Yep - what Wendy said. Learn how to do what she did, and your photos will carry much more impact. |

this was an eyes closed challenge, how in a true to the challenge can you do as desbribed, i could have just framed it properly exposed it correctly and shot bu then thats wouldn't be in the spirit of the challenge
he second image is very dark and the foreground appears improperly exposed. there is also nothing interesting about this either. there is a distracting contrail by the sun, and this image also screams for a lens flare that doesn't appear to exist.
the fs image i had an over cooked hdr but wound it back thinking it was to over cooked, it held a lot of interest to me as there was so much to see and find in the valley, i'll push it a bit further next time i guess its a fine line between subtlety and dpc voter appreciation
johanna and tiny i aint happy unless they ribbon haha, well not really but its a quest for improvement if i shrug my shoulders and say thats ok ill take that. im not going to push myself on.

PS several people left comments on the photos themselves. You may want to check. |

I think from now on...everyone needs to vote 10 on all images...That way we will all tie and get ribbons

... and if we do this all the votes will get scrubbed and we will all be tied for the brown.

Giles.....Ribbons do not mean you are a better photographer than you where before you got them. |

According to the collective consciousness of DPC, it does.
Actually, I agree with you, but it is very hard to keep it in mind when I enter a shot I am pleased with, that turned out just how I wanted, and then it meets with a resounding "meh". I need to often remind myself that the DPC collective is not always the intended target audience for my pics.
But go have a look at some of the pics from DPC members on Facebook. Even the stuff that just comes in with the pack here will be impressing the heck out of the non-photographer friends and family. My cycling contacts wow about photography that gets a lukewarm reception here. On the other hand, riding my bike 50+ miles is a normal Saturday morning outing for that group, no big whoop. It's all relative.

Bottom line, if you were happy with them...isn't that what matters? I now enter for me, more to see if what I like also appeals to others and I never will get a ribbon as I'm too far off the mark, but my goal is to improve my skills, thus in theory, as I improve, I should place better, but as Spiffy said...it's all relative. Opinions are like..(insert body part here), everybody has one. Shoot for you and learn where you can. The ribbons will come. |

ditto.
I don't know if this is better but DPC friendly, maybe. Only pulled up hue/sat.
