when you've taken a pic you like and the lighting in it isn't quite right is it possible to lighten part of the pic and darken another part?
in this fish pic if I lighten the whole thing the loach at the front and the gourami are too light - if I darken it I loose the background. It would have been better if I'd had a better tank light but I didn't at the time ....so is it possible to 'fix' it later?
pic taken manual setting F8.0,ISO 100, 1/320
thanks

Yes it is possible. You can either use the dodge tool, or layers to lighten only portions of you photo in PS

It depends on your purpose. If you are working on a picture for an open challenge, the tools spydr mentions are not legal. For your own use, or for member's challenges (if you should choose to join) it can certainly be done.

I'm not sure precisely what the final effect you want is, but this is my best attempt in Paint Shop Pro:
The method that cpanaioti posted is especially useful.

Hi Sue,
Like Squirrel, I`m not to sure which way you want to go on this but I also had a go on PsP and bearing in mind that I`m pretty much a beginner at these things..this is my best shot.

thank you both - that is the pretty much the effect I was looking for thanks squirrel....the background lighter and the foreground a bit less exposed. And you've answered my question which was can you pick out bits of a pic and alter the high/low lights in just those parts. I'll work my way through the tutorial cpanaioto recommended, have another go at it and come back with the results......and no doubt more questions
