Can we move on already?

I watch the news pretty often but this week I haven't been able to keep sane! It's worse now because I have to do a stupid paper about this dang thing for a professor who rants and raves so heavily about how awful this is and how bad each of us are for not caring about this case. Yeah, it sucks the kid died... I'll pray for the family as I do for many families that have lost loved ones. But when someone tells me that I am a bad person for not wanting to pay attention to a one hour class on a case that no one in the class knows about? Common!!! Let's move on! We have spent 3 full classes talking about this case... I keep quiet because the people who are persuaded easily by my professor would gang up on me without knowing what they are talking about!

CAN WE JUST MOVE ON!?!

Your response to case overload is to start a new thread about it?

It's my rant to let it all out so that I can release my anger towards the situation in a healthy manner.

I'm hearing you on this.

I find it odd that the media didn't report it until the big news case at present was over...

They started 33 days after the "victim" was dead.

Then, they posted a shot of the victim from when he was twelve and innocent looking. NOT saying he WASN'T innocent... but if he was, why post a photo from five years ago when current images were available. The current ones show what looks to be a very different story.

And... WHY did NBC "photoshop" the blood and injuries from the "killer's" video of his arrest before putting it out for the news? Is is because he told the police that the "victim" hit him on the back of the head and on the nose and they wanted to dispute that by Photoshopping his nose and the blood on the back of his head?

Why did the news folks neglect to say that the "killer" had no record (even a moving violation) and that the "victim" is currently suspended from school?

WHY the new bias?

I have no side chosen here, but I'd really have liked to have made my own decision with real facts. Not photoshopped videos and old photos.

There was no reporting because there was no arrest, and no "crime" according to the local police. Only by his parents agitating and dealing with anyone who would listen (including petitions on places like change.org where I signed a petition demanding this be investigated three days after the shooting) did this become a national story, when it became clear that the local police were not going to take any action.

In 2005, Zimmerman was arrested and charged with "resisting officer with violence" and "battery of law enforcement officer." Both these felonies are considered third-degree. The charges were reduced to "resisting officer without violence" and then the only remaining charge was also completely waived off when he entered an alcohol education program.
In the same year (2005), Zimmerman's ex-fiance, Veronica Zuazo, filed a civil motion for a restraining order, alleging domestic violence. In retaliation, Zimmerman filed for a retraining order against Zuazo and both these claims were resolved with both restraining orders granted.
The next year, in 2006, Zimmerman was charged with speeding. However, that case was dismissed because the officer who charged him failed to show up at the court. So he has a record, but no convictions. And no moving violations.

Martin was caught spraying graffiti on school grounds and his latest suspension was for having a baggie with trace amounts of marijuana. He was never charged by the police and as such none of the charges or evidence was ever supposed to be public, so its hard to say what happened, but he has never been charged with anything. I don't think that makes it impossible for him to have hit another person, but only one of the two has ever been charged with attacking another person.

As for being "tired of the story", it has become the usual media circus. How many people have heard about the police killing of another young black man because he was unfortunate enough to match a description of an attacker that some a**hole made up and called in to 911. However just because the media is doing its usual thing (think the Kobe trial) does not mean the Martin/Zimmerman case is not worth thinking about for a host of reasons,

Sorry -- I don't have much sympathy for you.

1. You're in a class -- the professor thinks it's important, why not take this opportunity to delve into it further and explore why he thinks it's important?

2. Keeping quiet is ridiculous. What a waste of an opportunity. If you disagree -- say something. The teacher wants people to learn from this. Sitting back and sticking with the party line because you don't want to stand up for your own beliefs is such a waste. Open discussion, disagreement, good dialog is when you get your money's worth from education. Get invested in your education and be a part of it. You'll get more out of it.
