Any suggestions for an inexpensive monopod that I can also quickly flip the camera to a vertical position when needed?

My Slik monopod can do that as long as you mount the camera that way, but since it only tips in one direction that also would preclude "proper" use of the monopod, where the leg should be angled away from you and your two legs become the rest of the tripod. You might want to find one with a ball head that can go either way.

Lots of threads in the forums about monopods.
Also check Ebay.

IMO the Bogen Manfrotto 3229 head is my only choice for a Monopod head. It rotates from landscape to portrait via a turn knob. Very secure and comes with a QR (quick release) plate. There are a couple of Bogen Manfrotto monopods in the 41-51 US dollar range. With the 3229 head, total price is around 65-85 dollars. I just picked up their 680 monopod, 4 section. Sturdy and compact. $51.95

On tripods, I prefer a "ball" head, but on mono's I prefer the 3229.

You can always drop one leg on your tripod and use it as a monopod.
