Thankfully I've managed to give that up.... (the looking at DPReview forums) I came to the conclusion, in a very slow way, that reading those forums was doing absolutely zip to improve the pictures I was taking.

Canon EOS 10D vs Canon Digital Rebel. Which one to choose ? might be interesting too

So as a "photographer", do you choose a camera based on its useability or based on some technical "moire" issue? :) if you don't care for the moire issue, then D70 is the clear choice in the current lineup (no investmnets in lenses assumed...)

The one I'd personally use more. A great choice of camera isn't so great if it always stays at home, for example.

Sounds like there is a debate between Kavey and Pete on which one that would be though, for a given hand size ;)

I totally agree! Some of the nitpicking there was holding me back, and I finally read a couple of articles by the Luminous-Landscape guy about measurbating and pixel nitpicking and all that, and I finally got it. All the current DSLR's are wonderful cameras, image quality wise. What matters is how you get along with them and how they feel to you, etc. Now I'm going to concentrate on my shooting and stop worrying about hardware for a while...

You can seriously get sucked into all the pixel nitpicking, which in the end, simply doesn't matter.

Indeed - I think we both agree that the Nikon is a better choice - all I have to do now is somehow trick her into agreeing that she could get on with the feel of it :)

I hope this doesn't sound too simplistic, but if possible, why not borrow a friend's 10d, 300d and see how you like it? Personally it really takes me about 2-4 days with a serious piece of equipment to even begin to truely evaluate it in the hand. I tossed and turned over the 10d/digiRebel purchase for about 2 months before deciding on the 10d as I figured that if I were ultimately spending that much on a system I might as well go all the way. One thing that I learned after the fact, (and I am now envious of digiRebel owners) is the generally half-off prices they enjoy with software(captureOne) and hardware (minus lenses). If weight is that much of an issue with the 10d you may want to look into the primes which feel great! My favorite lens so far and by far is my 50mm/1.8 which is a featherweight and takes BEAUTIFUL pictures! Anyway, good luck with your purchase and HAVE FUN.

I love my D70!

Got my first ribbon a month ago because of it. I might get another one for the current challenge (I wish!).

Sorry I am not very technical so I couldn't dabble with technicalities. I just like it because it is so easy to use. And my favorite lens. The very cheap 50 mm 1.8 F. It is very good for portrait shot and the landscape pics aren't that bad. Of course I have other lenses too.

Exactly... I WANT the D70 - the lens is far and away preferable... there doesn't even seem to BE a lens with 18-70 range for the Canon fit that we can find! And for the price the features on the D70 are indeed marginally better too.

But the darn thing is so big that I'm worried I won't ever find it comfortable to hold and hence won't use as much. I mean I bought the newer of the two film SLRs ONLY because the old one, being quite heavy, was starting to get left at home... so I bought a smaller, lighter version.

Anyway, thanks for all the input (and the link to the comparisons on the image resource site) - I've said to Pete I need to go and hold them again before final decision.

I know we'll be happy with performance of any of these (and it's really between D70 and 300D now) so it's just about ensuring we get one that we both WILL use.

Can't borrow from friends - none of them live anywhere close and we don't have time to visit them and borrow them and make a decision and buy the camera after that and still have time to learn all about it before we go.

Anyway, THANKS ALL!

WE BOUGHT THE NIKON D70 THIS MORNING!!!

Went to a Jessops store to check them out again and I decided I could use the D70. Not quite as comfortable for me as the 300D but not unusable and I much prefer the 18-70 lens it comes with too.

Surprised I was able to negotiate a discount at all because when we phoned before leaving they had "some" in stock. When we got there at 9.45 they had two left and were in the process of selling one to another customer at the same time as us.

He didn't think to ask for any discounts at all but I got a discount on the camera, on the longer lens and on both spare batteries. And by 10.15 they were out of D70s again!

So we bought the D70, the 18-70mm lens, a refurbished 70-300mm lens and two spare batteries for £1114 which I'm happy with. Might have got it marginally cheaper online (from the UK or from the USA) but would have been worried about damage in transit (no time to send for a replacement before the trip) or failure to deliver on time etc.

So there you go.

And then I went to meet friends from the USA in Camden Town and Pete came home and played with the new toy!

THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE ADVICE AND INPUT!

Well, somebody hasn't used it yet, but OK...

Glad to hear the selection process was fruitful. Enjoy.

BTW, it really doesn't surprise me that the D70 was the choice. Kavey afterall has been accustomed to "larger" handlings.....what with Gander at 6'6" and "large hands".....

Travel safe and have a great time.

I'm sure I don't know WHAT you mean!

Seriously, many thanks to everyone for riding this rollercoaster with us and for the input too!

Flash, thanks too for the PMs... and for the well wishes for the trip.

We'll take a picture (on the D70 of course) of our wedding renewal and share it when we get back.

As I Yashica/Contax film user, I have always admired Canon gear. I had really wanted to purchase a Canon EOS Elan. They always seemed like great cameras. But due to the fact I had some much invested in lenses for Yashica cameras, I went with the Contax AX instead.

When the digital rebel came out, I thougth now was my time to move to Canon, but comparing the Nikon and the Rebel, I have to say, I am now going to Nikon.

I follow photography pretty closely, and I really do not feel there is any image quality difference between the major camera makers. It all comes down to personal preferrence, and the spot metering and flash compensation of the Nikon make it an easy choice for me.

PS, someone mentioned that Contax had a full frame digital body out, I dont think that product ever made it to market.

Kavey , Kits / Ritz Cameras didnt open until 10 am our time ,LOL , but I was there when they raised the gate . Got the Kit & Nikkor 70 - 300 4-5.6 Ed + cards & reader . Have to drive to Phoenix to get the quality of filters & tripod I need , Poor guy @ Ritz , they give him a 1200.00 camera to sell & none of the peripherals , he could have made a lot more commission if Ritz had it together .

Don't you think that Canon is several years ahead of any other manufacturer when it comes to FF sensor technology? ...

There is always a lot made of "full frame" as though it is the gold standard of digital formats. Why? Why should digital camera formats pay homage to physical dimensions laid out with reference to celluloid film characteristics of several decades ago? If one was to look at digital camera technology and all the compromises to be traded off between image quality, cost, camera/lens size, optical issues etc and so to discern the optimum image sensor size, would a near-obsolete chemical imaging technology be the primary consideration? I think not. There is only one thing certain about the old 35mm "full frame" size - it was not optimised for digital photography.
The same goes for the ISO debate - if a digital camera "lacks" an ISO100 setting, so what? Look at the results - if that camera's lowest ISO setting gives results akin to a film ISO100 or 64 then that is all that matters.
