I'm going to be headed to China in June with about 100 other teachers do different parts of the country. I have been asked to set up a password protected chat room for the purpose of the teachers being able to communicate and share issues with each other. I'd like it to be something like the dpc fanatics chat where you can create password protected accounts and possibly only be able to register with approval from an administrator, but that may be getting ahead of myself. I would be willing to shoot some money through paypal or even send a check for a reasonable sum of money for someone to either help me set up or set something up completely for me.

Thanks in advance

Yahoo groups would be a good choice, but make sure no one who needs access to it is using a Mac.

I run phpmychat from my website and it's decent but it works a little differently than fantatics because it refreshes rather than having the content pushed. I think that for most computers, that doesn't really matter but it may be a problem with slower ones. If you're interested, I can let you test mine.

do you have a provider already? they usually offer this with their use. I have 1and1.com and they have chat and also video conferencing included.

If you have a Unix-based web server with Perl installed, you could try running the same chat software as DPCFanatics...

Yes 1and1.com allows Perl, PHP, Mysql and etc.

I have installed and used PHPNuke, MyPHPAdmin, Gallery, Coppermine and Jenado ecart.

But sorry to say I'm not the expert that can help you :(

Who installed and setup your website?

Why whould this have any effect? I have not used the chat features, but have used the email and online message parts, photot and other file posting, and it all seems fine on a Mac or PC. It is all web based, so if your browser and email program are working correctly you shold have no problems. Yahoo is one of the biggest internet based companies., I would be 99.99% sure their stuff works on ALL platforms.

If you're going to use the phpmychat, I can help you. Do you have a 1and1.com package that allows you to set up mysql databases?
04/18/2004 01:34:42 AM · #17
i'm pretty sure i do, yeah

are you planning on having everyone logged in to the chat at the same time, or are you also thinking about doing something w/ a message board?

You might want to look around //www.hotscripts.com .. they have some stuff thats free that you could set up to do either of these, using whichever languages your provider allows.

I'm not really familiar with 1and1, but if you want to hook up on chat sometime, I can see if I can help you, or if you want, you can send me your account info and I'll sign in and see if I can do it.

Sigmachat is a pretty good chat room but with the free version anybody with the link can log in (unless to put the app in a members only part of your site). The site I have it on is suffering from some page errors right now but you can take a look at it here (requires Java).
