I've been planning for this since I went to the seminar back in October :-)
It has been such a strange experience, to have absolute certainty that I was going to get chosen, and then to get chosen. I've been incorporating new equipment specifically with this goal in mind, and today I did a totally portable, strobe-lit architectural shoot with that equipment. I'm pretty pleased with the results. It's not too heavy or cumbersome, although I will have to figure out some modifiers. Obviously not for all my images, but I have some stuff in mind that I'd like to try with lights.
I will most likely be using The Hand's 4WD, will be fully stocked with food, water, walkie/talkie, extra clothes, prepared for hot/cold/wet/dry, have GPS, etc. Last year a friend of ours was in the national news, lost for 6 days in Joshua Tree. He was found alive, barely. I don't plan to repeat his mistakes.
I do hope to be uploading at least of few of my images from there. Stay tuned for news of the exhibit which will take place in the summer sometime :-)
Thanks, Doc! Will definitely look into that

If somebody can do it, you are the one!
The most heat that I experienced was F 116 in Phoenix, AZ.
Oh, the stories you'll have. Plus the pics! Have to muster my patience.
Meanwhile, I wait for a journal of your prep work. |

Best wishes and here's hoping that your exciting adventure will be all that you dream - the danger of the desert is outweighed by the romance and beauty as long as you take good care and I am sure they will train you well. |

Hehehehe. I feel like I'm going on Survivor! No worries, I'm certain I'll have absolutely everything I need, and I promise to be careful and wear my sunblock. I have an inactive blog at the moment, which I've been trying to resurrect for a few weeks now, and will most likely be writing about this on there. I'm not sure what the connectivity issue is out there, but where there's a will, there's a way. Thanks to melethia, I learned how to tether phone to my laptop :-) |

Congratulations, Johanna. All the best for this exciting adventure you are about to embark upon. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
A funny thing about knowing you would get this, I've had a similar experience in totally different circumstances. I KNEW I was going to win a grocery grab. I went along to the draw and a guy's name was pulled out. I thought 'This just isn't right, I know that this is mine.' And it was. To win you had to be present, and the poor fellow wasn't. My name came out next. So, it seems that sometimes things are just meant to be, and we KNOW it. Now in the case of your great opportunity, this was meant to be because you are the right person for the job, and the job is right for you.

Congrats.
When I lived in CA, Mojave was one of my favorite places to roam. IMO, it's one of the most beautiful places on earth. I'm sure you'll produce some lovely work.
Stay warm or cool, depending on the weather and above all stay hydrated. |
