This has gotten really deep for so many shallow minds!
I guess when you bring the subject up you kind of better be prepared for everything , and everthing under the sun has a place, or a meaning, or a point for being here, wished i could remember and quote a certain poem for this......
However I am not so sure everyone here is all that shallow at all,
I am glad that other civilians from other countries can relate or not pass judgement against the American artist here.. Specially since really we are all on this earth, under the sun, and all is different just stating to each of their own points or places on this nation....
I really like ( frumoaznicul ) his point summing it up at the end with global peace!!
Hey cant we all just get along!!!!
Peace.............

Yes but looking on how things are today we are verry far from that and what I'm saying is that maybe if we all would have a less self centered view on things would be a great start. That's why I'm always so intrigued with americas culture of "we and only we are the greatest all mighty, powerful reachest smartest and a$$ kickers all over the world and our flag is more than just a flag like any other country has one... etc"
Edit: Nobody is against americans, atleast i'm not I admire them but I guess I'm amazed by theyr ability to unconditionately love themselves so much.

Where do you come up with this stuff?
I am "intrigued" by your insight into my feelings/culture!? What is this insight based on? We have never met.
I think that when people make assumptions about things that they may not have first hand knowledge, and then make broad generalized statements about their assumptions, that is counter productive toward "world peace".

Personally, it's not whether a flag (of any country) fits the challenge or doesn't fit a challenge, it's "is this an original and unique shot." I'm a bit tired of American flags and Christian symbols in any and all challenges. I think they're over-done. As Simon from American Idol would say, "I think you're choosing photos that are *safe*." - as in flag and christian photographs are just over-done, not very unique or original. I vote according to a few different criteria - originality is one of them. I am aware that some people choose a similar subject and shoot it over and over again. As long as the subject is shot in a unique way then I give it the thumbs up. I've even given a cat photo a 10 when the image is something I've never seen before in my lifetime. In fact, I'd give a flag photo a 10 if it was shot in a way I've never seen before. Unfortunately, most flag photos in DPChallenges aren't shot in a way that's like "wow!" |

Excuse me if I maybe used the word "intrigued" wrong I speak some other language at home but i'm sad that you love your flag so much that you fail to understand what I said whas not an attack but a curiousity. And yes I know alot about your culture I'm sure more than you know about mine and probably any other, and I do belive that it is counter productive that all the education thru all channels possible is focused on "we are the greatest and the only ones" but don't worry you are not the only ones the recently invented "European Union" will probably beat you on it soon. You probably cant see it because you are there and you don't have to care about the rest of the world you can "peacefuly" join the "boycot France" movement on Fox Channel whenever France doesn't agree on something with US, you can watch the Hollywood movies where there is always an american hero ready to save the world, but please don't ask me in wich american state is "romania" or "europe" as so many americans asked me. I started saying I'm in Transylvania recently because they are probably thinking I misspelled Pensylvania and they move to the next issue. What I whas trying to say is that we all (not only americans) would be less self centered in views, we might get along better. I remember a Discovery Channel quote "connecting through cultures, celebrating diversity" wich I really think would work for a global peace. But that wont happen while theories that holds one nation superious and another inferiour are still standing. And please don't tell me there is no obsession with the american flag over there. Don't make me send you count flag shots only here on dpc, see how many american ones and how many others. That's fine with me is your flag I'm glad you love it so much I love mine too but I fail to see it as a piece of art anyway I look at it, mine or yours. |

I think any flag from any country would fit the challenge. Every country is strong in one way or another and people's pride in their flag/country is usually strong. Voting down flags of countries I don't like would be voting on my political/geographical preferences and not on photographic quality. That would make me a very petty, bitter person.
I also think this country bashing, my country is better then your country crap is childish.
PS I have no photo entered in the strength challenge. |

Cristi, again you are assuming very much. As a matter of fact I do know a little about Romania. I spent about a year working with 30 Romanian rufugees in 1994.
My point is you don't know me. I am American, and I do not fit the profile that you are describing as "american culture".
Please do not let the media define me to you.
If I had a dog who was mean, would it be fair to say that all dogs are mean? No. Defining all dogs as mean may cause conflict, not understanding or peace.
I submit that trying to define "American culture" is impossible. The beliefs and customs present in this country are as varied as the origins of our citizens.
I will not reply again to this thread, as I do not want to argue. I have learned something about how I, as an American, may be perceived outside this country. Thank you for opening my eyes.
Eric

Maybe you are right and I am being fooled by media. Media sells comercials and they exagerate everything to sell better, I know that that's why I never defined anything I whas reather asking and being curious about it. Belive me I'm a verry peaceful person and I'm verry much against generalizing too, but there are things that defines every country more or less. And I whas just curious where this unique love for theyr flag comes from for americans. When I said the "we americans our flag and the bigest a$$ kickers" and those things not only that I whas joking, but I whas quoting a few that wrote here before about those things trying to explain why theyr flag reflects "srength". Read back if you wish. I probably took this too far and mixed it with some feelings I personaly have about what's happening globaly nowadays, and I apologise for it now. I certainly am not the person who hates any nation, or even to generalize anything. I'm sorry this turned the way it did, I whas 90% joking and 10% asking before you came and took it so serious. I said it before and I say it again I'm far from being someone who hates americans, I admire them, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings it whas never my intention.
Cristi. |

I would attribute this to the fact that this site is based in the US. If this site was all in german or russian I doubt there would be any pictures of anything related to the US. People take pictures of what they experience, and for most here their experience is one from a US perspective.
Basically all I'm saying is this site originated in the US, so you have to expect a US slant. |

It's not the site's origin that gives it the slant but the people who participate. I agree that the majority of participants are American, however, with the nature of the internet, there are a large number of international participants. There is a responsibility of all participants to consider the audience (not in any particular order), one for the Americans to realize the international audience and two for the international participants to realize the large number of American participants. I'm sure most of us already do this without thinking.

I am a Romanian living in Italy, travelling as much as I can around Europe and one day, I hope, around the world.
Accepting diversity is the whole issue. I'll try to give an answer to Cristi (frumoaznicul) as for being a Romanian as him
but also to many others here ready to sharpen the hatchet.
Americans do love their flag because:
1. Most of the times it is the only element they have in common. I know a lot of Americans and I must asure you that they feel, talk, vote, fart (;-)) differently from one state to another and also sometimes within the same city. Take New York for example: there must be at least 20 different important ethnic communities. Sometimes they do not even talk the same language !!! (cab drivers are maybe the classic example)
2. It is a result of their fast evolving history (fiftysomething stars).
3. Have the same same colours as Pepsi cola, flags like French, Czech, Cuban (hehe), UK, North Korea (haha), Iceland (U guyz over there rule on dpc lately), Puerto Rican, etc. etc. ;-)
After all they love diversity even if they don't know that...
The baseline is that all this "stars and stripes" syndrome comes out from the 60's pop art mainstream and became esthetically a common international reference within the fashion industry. The American Flag shares the imagery space from this point of view with Che Guevarra black & red portrait (ironically also).
I think that these are maybe part of the untold reason of the permanent american flag entries on whatever challenge.
At this point I'd have a funny but peaceful proposal:
OPEN CHALLENGE NEW THEME - "A flag that is not of your country" or better said "A foreign flag".
Alex
p.s.: make photos not wars ;-)

I'm not saying anything because my neck is still bleeding, I hope you don't get yours biten too for "generalising" or trying to explain/understand stuff in general. I knew they love it but never realised before how over sensitive they are about it :)) I'm going to give all flag entries a 10 from now on :D
PS try to point out clearly parts where you were joking they don't seem to have the same sense of humour we do :)

i think almost everyone realizes that there are a good number of people from outside the US on this site. and i would say a very large portion (probably more than half) of the good photographers here are not from the US, and some that just live in the US but were born elsewhere.
it also seems the non US members are more active and vocal in the forums.
this is all a good thing by the way. |

It really does help, since the internet works largely in text, to provide some visual indication of the "smile" on your face, if you are truly joking. Smilies are REQUIRED to translate mood properly, unless you are an orator of unparalled ability. It has nothing to do with our sense of humor or the lack thereof; we simply have no indication that you are trying to be funny. Please don't assume that we hear you giggling or laughing as you type; it's not true.
Please, also, don't assume we all have identical senses of humor. I find many things absolutely hilarious that would cause my father to simply grunt. There's approximately 250,000,000 in the US. Most of us don't even know each other, let alone agree with each other. :-)
