MargaretN , (and for anyone else who might be hesitant) I just want to add this as food for thought.

It *IS NOT* an end all be all, just something to think upon... quite often, it is not what you say but how you say it that is important.
.
.
.
.
.

* If you offer your impression or advice in a pro/con, strength/weakness, "I may be off base but I think/feel...", fair & balanced fashion 99% of the time people are willing and open to listening to what you have to say.
.
.
.
.
.

* Let them know why it caught your attention - it may be that it made you think something from of 'x' story, 'x' saying, 'x' scene from movie etc. There is a world of our experiences, both shared and personal, that we draw on when looking at photos. Let's see, for example your previous Urban Nature entry. I look upon the image and I feel the autumn chill and the dampness in the air because it made me recall the feel of autumn chill and smell of wet rain as I rushed to class back in college - saying how the imagery touched you can be just as important to the photographer/artist.
.
.
.
.
.

*Time and attention - exploring the why it was done the way it was presented IS enriching to both the photographer and commenter. This is the method of approaching an image from the angle of trying to understand what the photographer was trying to convey. It is akin to exploring different camera angles and ways of taking a picture of say the Eiffel Tower - you try to find what/how will make it interesting and in the process discover something new.

Understood. One fears that what one says will be abrasive or flat out wrong (for example, the artist may have been incorporating the technique of bokeh to project mood and it was fully intentional rather than having everything crystal clear sharp).

But if you don't venture out to explore how to express your thoughts by exploring other imagery how/where do you draw inspiration from? How do you discover new things and new 'angles' of thought? Commenting can be another avenue of looking at things in a new light and as such it enriches not just the photographer who receives the comment but the commentor too.

(Bold added by me) - this is my major problem. I like commenting, but am not very good with written words, so I worry that I will offend people with my opinion or thoughts, and I'm also not very good at making pictures either, so I really have no clue on the technicals. So I try to be nice yet still comment/criticise according to my opinion. And that's just what it is - only my opinion.

Anyway, I'm trying really hard to comment and vote on this whole challenge and so far:
You have commented on 85 images (21%) in this challenge.

...It's really hard >.<

if people dont like my comments too bad. sometimes it may come off as harsh, but i do try to explain a little why I like or dont like an image or even how i would change it.

so for i have gotten three PMs thanking me for my comments and how i felt it could be improved or why the image didn't resonate with me.

commenting is mainly an exercise for myself with mutual benefits to the photographer.

you don have to be good at taking them to know what you like, if it looks oversharpned , say so, if the colors are off, say so, if the composition isnt working for you say so.

those comments i feel are much more important than "that's pretty" plus you find that YOU wont make the same mistakes in your images.

Not going to sugarcoat it, for commenting is difficult at times...it is a challenge:-) Commenting is an art - the more you practice what and HOW you say things the better you are for it. I'm sure some do not find value in leaving comments because it takes too much of their time or the fear of doing so controls them. BUT, taking the time to explore and/or analyze what a photo does for us, how it affects us, and expressing that in a comment can and does enrich us in ways that are not physically measurable. I cannot tell you how many times I have looked upon a photo that it inspired me to try a new angle, look at 'x' subject in a new light, or just made me stop and think why do I like what I see or not see.

One does not necessarily HAVE to comment on all the images in a challenge...you may set a goal number that you would like to achieve. I sometimes set a number for myself but rarely meet that because the driving force is what I want to express takes time. I am wordy....which is why I will never be able to reach 100% on commenting even on small challenges that have 50 entries. I think too much:-)

I am suffering from the DPC burnout at the moment and can't stand looking at many similar images any more. Especially my own ;)

Thank you, Jennifer. I received a comment from you on the Best of challenge today and found it especially helpful. Thanks for taking the time on this.

I will try to follow your lead on this and block out some time this week to make more comments.

i hit the 20 comment mark, may do more

i kinda wish it was called the 2011 Free Study, too. my BEST images last year were all challenge entries, so i combed through non-DPC images for my submission, as opposed to an "outtake" (and there seemed to be a lot of "outtakes" in this challenge)

Wow!! That is seriously impressive. Well done, I'm not even close yet...

Tried to vote & comment more tonight, but I have a seriously slow connection tonight (gotta love Telstra!) and it's just too painful... Will try again tomorrow night and see if I can get further along.
