Aye, most of the canvas prints I've seen lately are wrapped on a "stretcher" frame of some kind, and are marketed as read-to-hang without additional framing. |
Ah, good points! Funny that I didn't think of that, since it's how I have my one canvas print hanging on my wall. *smacks forehead*
I'll suggest just that, naturally adding a bit to the price but explaining he'll save loads on framing.
The tricky thing is to show him online examples without him seeing the price list! This whole thing is happening via email, since his hotel's a good drive from here (I'll be asking for PayPal payment before I order the print). |
Send him this link... https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&hl=en&source=hp&biw=1440&bih=785&q=floating+frame+canvas&gbv=2&oq=floating+frame&aq=1&aqi=g4g-m5g-S1&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=2252l4316l0l7831l14l14l0l2l2l0l88l846l12l12l0 and just say it would give him an idea what a floating frame looked like. Just realize, it does up the cost at CoD. |

Thanks, Kelli.
I did a search like you and found one showing an unframed canvas print hanging over a fireplace, as this will be. It helps that the lighting is, well, spectacular. :)
I sent that to him, recommending it as a way to catch people's attention even at a high angle, and also making it look more like an art gallery. From things he's said, I get the impression he wants to improve the ambiance of the hotel as he redecorates.
I also increased the price to $269 but explained that it'd save him 200+ in framing, and mentioned that a 12x12 we have of our daughters on our wall cost us about that to frame.
BTW, a funny thing on pricing: my stepfather took a seminar where they said to not use round numbers, because people will assume you're making it up. But use something more specific, and they assume there's a reason behind it.
That's why I chose $215, not $200. And the difference between thin and thick wrap is $18, so I just tripled that, added it to $215, and got $269.
BTW, to anyone considering how to get canvas prints: //canvasondemand.com will take you as a pro with pretty much just a statement that you intend to sell prints, and that gets you a 25% discount! That's the CanvasOD Hahn23 is referring to.

Yeah, but if you're really going to follow those rules, you should be making it $268.99 ...
I sometimes like to use binary powers, e.g $256 ... :-) |

That fits with everything I've learned about you over the years, Paul (speaking as a fellow geek). :) |

The canvas came today, and it looks fantastic. I went with canvasondemand.com, which had a 25% off sale for Leap Day. That's on top of the 25% pro discount, which anyone can get. I have a feeling if you check their Facebook page, they'll regularly post discounts.
Here it is sitting on the back of my bed for scale (forgive the crappy lighting here). I'll take it over to the hotel in a few weeks when they're ready to hang it.
Thanks again to everyone for helping me price it!
And again, here's the original shot:
One thing I've never been sure of is how things do on enlarging, so here's how I did this. This started out as an 1800x1200 pixel crop of a bigger original. They ask for 150 dpi images, so it would've printed at 12x8. I initially simply doubled it to 24x16 using Photoshop Elements 9's bicubic smoother (which PS recommends for enlarging), then manually stretched the outer portions to add another 2.625" on all sides for the depth of the wrap. By doing the stretching myself, as opposed to letting PS resize to the new aspect ratio (29.25x21.25 vs. 24x16), I was able to keep the composition on the face the same as in the original.
