I'd go with "burn your village" instead of "lose my vote", but that might be construed as some form of threat. |

I think its funny that a lot of them are students who are trying to do research but apparently lack the ability to READ.

That string of comments illustrates why our impending doom is inevitable. |
OMG! That's hysterical. Impending doom is right. |
If you use Wikipedia for your homework apparently you have to put an f-bomb in every sentence or people will not understand how frustrated you are.

What honestly terrifies me is that most of those people probably vote, and are proud of themselves for it.... SMH... We're screwed aren't we? |

This SOPA bill...It really would be pretty simular to the way China runs the intenet....They limit what users in their country can see...so this is another way the govmt is trying to push us toward that type of control

I love this one:
"WHY ... DID WIKIPEDIA DECIDE TO CLOSE ITSELF DOWN ON THE DAY THAT I DECIDED TO USE IT FOR MY ESSAY!"
At least there were no spelling mistakes. :)

Just so you realize, it's not the Obama camp doing this. This is a bill written by lobbyists for large corporations being sponsored by republicans. |

Not quite so. Mostly Republicans, but many Dems as well. Nowadays, they are indistinguishable.
"The Stop Online Piracy Act was introduced by Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX) and was initially co-sponsored by Howard Berman (D-CA), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Mary Bono Mack (R-CA), Steve Chabot (R-OH), John Conyers (D-MI), Ted Deutch (D-FL), Elton Gallegly (R-CA), Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Timothy Griffin (R-AR), Dennis A. Ross (R-FL), Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Lee Terry (R-NE)." |

Yep, you're right. Indistinguishable. I heard that Microsoft was initially behind this, along with some major movie studios. I assume that whom ever is taking money from them signed on. |

well, actually there are people going to theatres with hd cameras, filming the movie and distributing it just a few days after official release..
I suppose 3d theatres have allowed an edge for a while, but now 3d displays are not that expensive.
while I think they should make money, endangering freedom of information and innovation on the internet is ludicrously narrow minded. They need to find distribution solutions that guarantee them an income. Things like spotify are probably the way forward. This said, their estimates of potential loss of income are often completely absurd.. |

the problem with this type of legislation is that it lays a foundation for censorship. In reality, that would likely never happen, but you cant allow it to happen in any case.
you cant just allow sites to be shut down becuase someone doesn't like the content they provide.

"It is also an abuse of power given the freedoms these companies enjoy in the marketplace today."
Just, wikipedia niche is not exactly a market, isn'it?
Some people really have a till where the heart should be..

You should read some of the studies that have been done on the accuracy of Wikipedia vs. traditional encyclopedias. It's an eye-opener, especially in the area of the sciences.

but how can a college let students use something that isn't verified fact for a reference source that's just ridiculous especially when they have access to verified sources through the school.

Wikipedia is *one* source, and articles *are* referenced, so, like any other source, the student can check the references. Any referenced work must cite more than a single source, and the student must discuss/reconcile differences in data from different sources. It's erroneous to assume that these other "verified sources" always contain completely reliable and truthful information. In the end, Wikipedia is no different than any other source, printed or otherwise.
