Have fun! |
Gosh...I don't think I've ever been stood up over a set of trees before...::dainty pout::
I'm going to tell the ENTS on you, Dale!

Thanks Deb. We've got a couple other guys coming to help us and this was the only time it could be arranged... :( . I will be happy that the trees are gone. |

Alas, I have dual obligations that day as well, but as a companion to my wife, so that is a doghouse I don't want to enter!
That will not, however, stop me from adding unsolicited advice! ;)
Leo Cabrillo State Park is about 20 minutes past Point Dume, and has parking plus a secluded sandy beach accessible through a tunnel under the highway as well as an interesting rock formation in the water complete with tide pools if you time it right. Good moon right now, low tide is negative today. Great campground as well for being so near to LA. If you want to head back to civilization instead, 3rd street promenade always has street performers, although not as nearly an interesting place as Venice Beach.
Desert locals? 4 and 1/2 hours away, or six in my Westfalia, a small desert town called Quartsite blooms into the biggest swap meet/ antique shop/ rock and mineral show this side of Phoenix. It blooms from a population of 4000 due to nine major gem, mineral, and 15 general swap meet shows, attracting about 1.5 million people annually, mostly in January and February. On the way you pass the Palm Springs Windmill fields, the Morongo Casino, as well as the outlet malls. There is a tram if you want to take a small detour that takes you from 100 degree desert to snow capped mountains. Bring a jacket!
Like another Desert with unique shooting spots? Mark your calendar for October 13 and 14 and join me at Searls Lake near Ridgecrest on the other side of Mohave. 3 hours away if you don't stop at Vasquez Rocks (as seen on Star Trek as a popular Alien Planet shooting spot), the California aqueduct, Massive folding visible in road cuts as you cross the San Andreas fault zone. After Mohave there is Red Rock Canyon (think mini Utah) Fossil Falls (you have to see it to believe it, volcanic extrusions and a massive Cinder-cone. Once at Searles lake there are the Pinnacles, but the main event is Gemorama. One weekend a year the mining company opens the (dry but not reallly) lake to the public. They drill a hole in the crust, and pump mud from the bottom full of halite and hanksite crystals! You just pick them up! You can go on three other excursions including collection Pink Halite, which you have seen at Natural Wonders.
I have included links, because I mentioned too much for you to google it all, but check it out and let me know when we are going! ;)
My .02
Cheers,
KJ |

Hi KJ! Thanks for all the info!! Sorry you can't join us - sure you don't want to bring your wife and treat her to an afternoon at Malibu??
Eventually we DO need to plan a desert trip or two. I know a couple of us want to do Salton Sea again....
But this weekend it's Malibu, Point Dume State Park at the parking lot, at 2 PM on Saturday. Mae very kindly gave us directions, which I'll paste below. If you're going and haven't mentioned so yet, kindly let us know so we'll know to look for you!
Directions to the meeting point:
If you want to google more specific directions, the address is
Westward Beach, Malibu, 90265
I don't know where all of you live, but here are directions close to the destination. I'm assuming that all of you live SOUTH of Malibu. So, you will come north on either 101 or PCH. Once you reach Kanan Dume road & PCH (please see map), please do the following:
1. PCH - North
2. Once you cross Kanan (or come over Kanan from the 101), you will go up the hill on PCH and then come down a longer hill
4. At the foot of the hill (slow down so you dont' miss it!), you will see a turn off for Westward Beach
5. Turn LEFT onto Westward Beach road
6. The road will loop around to the left
7. Keep going ALL THE WAY to the end of the road.
8. You will be driving along the beach
9. The parking lot is at the very end of the road.
If you miss the turn off for Westward Beach and continue North on PCH, you will know you have gone too far if you cross Morning View Road. You will have to turn around on PCH...(have fun with that...lol)...and come back to the foot of the hill where Westward Beach road crosses PCH.

Oh man, that Gemorama looks like nasty fun!!! Also Red Rock Canyon and Fossil Falls. Been to Vazquez Rocks (which was also passed of as "Arizona" in a CSI), and it's fabulous as well.
I definitely think we should plan GTGs around those dates and DO IT! |

i know it's kinda last minute, but is it ok for my wife and I to join in tomorrow? we really don't get out much for things like this but this GTG is relatively close so it seems it would be a good opportunity to meet a few dpc'ers. |
