I agree with where you're coming from, but imagine yourself now shooting Fabio (with a camera) on a beach. You're holding a 10fps monster and you are firing away, getting all of the dynamic glory that is Fabio, and of course Fabio's wind-tossed hair. Your feet shuffle this way and that, because he's just got that many good angles.

As you move about and change the orientation of the camera, it would be pretty sweet if it continued to lock in on Fabio's face without you having to do anything.

Doesn't mean much to those of us who mainly shoot landscapes, but as an environmental portrait photographer, street photographer or model photographer, I can see the value.

The features that are interesting to me are the illuminated buttons, the two-axis horizon line feature, and the in-camera HDR has some fun possibilities. Also, did I read correctly that with live view you can see the histogram before you shoot?

An ad for the D4.

How do you get $6000?

5800 euro= 7,417.57 USD...

The street price in the US has no straight reference to prices abroad. My Nikon rep told me street price was going to be $6k. I can only assume he isn't full of it.

Gotcha- I just thought you were going off what the ad said since you said what the price was and then linked the ad.

ETA: The mpix rating is good news on my side- there was speculation the D800 would have some ungodly horrendous amount, and this makes me renew my hope that it won't be some ridiculous number.

I'd say my rep was right on with the price. I'll have to rememember he shot me straight when it comes to spending my $$$.

The specifications are very disappointing. Other than the video aspect, what is the benefit over the D3? I guess I will need to wait for the rumoured D800 or the D4x in order to get higher resolution.

ETA: Anybody else find face recognition weird?

I don't think it can recognize your Uncle Joe from Uncle Gerald, but it would be able to recognize Uncle Joe from his birthday cake... helping you obtain focus.

My Lumix ZS-10 has face recognition. You can teach it who uncle Fred is. Or at least so it says. I don't see a real use for it. Supposedly it's a feature for tagging people for Facebook, etc. Seems pretty pointless to me. It also detects faces for assigning focusing points. Which does work pretty well.

all joking aside ..this is a great feature in combination with the lock ,for sports .. camera will lock on a face (or part of the face, like eye) of a person and even if they get out of the frame than get back in within a second or so camera will know its the subject and focus on him...

The D7000 has face recognition, and it's handy for video work as it tracks the subjects faces when everything is in motion. It's no big deal for still shooting, and can be turned off if you want to be a control head and do everything manually.
There are going to be a batch of people who have little photography experience, who will be buying the new gear just to have the most expensive new stuff, and they are the ones who will be needing the face tracking.
There was the same kind of fuss about built in automatic light metering (aka program, AP,and SP) when SLR's were relatively new technology. It seems to have caught on, and we would probably miss it if we didn't have it.
I actually used the "landscape" scene mode once on the 7000 when my granddaughter wanted to hold it and shoot out the window as we were riding.
