I was wanting to make some mist or fog effects. I was wondering if anyone knew how expensive it is or had any other suggestions on how to create these effects.

Baskin-Robnins sells dry ice, I donĂ¢€™t remember how much it cost but I think $5.00 to $10.00 worth would be enough for what you are looking for. Bring a cooler to put it in and have some gloves on hand. Just pop some in water and you get lots of fog.

Many ice cream sellers (esp the small wholesale ice cream/candy vendors) sell dry ice. Last I remember, its about $1 per pound.

I bought a cheap fog machine for $50.. I tried the dry ice and it was hard to control and it did not produce a lot fog...

If you do the dry ice right, it works great! Look at this shot by dsidwell:

Dry Ice is nice but if you know someone with a steam cleaner that may work too. Only downside is that the steam doesn't last as long as dry ice. I used a steam cleaner with this picture because I couldn't get dry ice.

But dry ice is difficult. The ice tends to form an icy shell around itself and it stops producing mist until you break it apart again. Then you have about 30 seconds until it happens again. It also flows like water downhill, so you have to aim it. The photo above was taken with the cookies in a bowl on water ice which was on dry ice, so it produced a hazier mist--but only to about 2 cm.

When you do use Dry Ice be carefull not to give your self frezer burn. Use gloves like scottwilson said. If you want to create a lot of smoke use very hot water and use a fan to direct your smoke where you want it. The smoke in dry ice is heavier than air so it will sink to the ground and follow the contours of the ground.

Don't forget that you need to work in a ventilated area when you are using dry ice.
