I realize I need another camera like frog needs shoes. However, without breaking the bank, I've benn mulling over a 1d MkII or along that line. Given that I really don't do justice to my 40D to start with, how happy, or unhappy, am I likely to be in comparison. I don't need high ISO. I am looking for sharpness, low noise, and good color rendition.

Are you perhaps referring to the 1Ds II? That would have the 35mm sensor. The 1D II is APS-H (1.3x crop). I'll assume you are looking at full frame. What I'd recommend is to pick up a lightly used 5D (the original, not the 5D II). They can be had for $900 USD or so. Yes, it's a six-year-old design, but it produces spectacular images. Beware, though - you would be "upgrading" to a sensor format over twice as large in area as your current one. You will be using the outer parts of image circles which you've only seen the centers of, and this may lead to some new opinions of your current glass.
The 35mm format is potentially a glass-lined, steep-sided money pit, and I do speak from experience, LOL. But then again, I would not go back, no sir. Such is the siren song of the larger format.

Indeed I was referring to the 1Ds II. Hadn't thought about the 5D, but I am now...

LOL
What a wondeful definition :D
I need quoting this to a friend of mine who's coveting a full frame as well. |

One's reminded of Dante's "Divine Comedy", where the entrance to the underworld is emblazoned with the words:

But what a wonderful, seductive hell it is...

I didn't jump to full frame, but I did recently get what was the best of Nikon's offerings five years ago as an addition to my arsenal. Like you, I wanted sharpness, good color, and low noise. I have been completely delighted with the results. The best cameras Canon/Nikon made five years ago depreciate *SO* nicely! Leo FocusPoint has been thrilled with his D1x purchase, and would probably concur....

I concur... Those who don't know, I have now TWO Nikon D1Xs in my arsenal... I wouldn't change any of them for anything (for real). |

| 5D is still a great camera, and is cheap. It's a slug compared to the 40D, I briefly had both in 2009 while selling my 40D. If time is not a factor, 5D3 should arriving in 2012 which means a used 5D mark II could be gracing your stormy cloud backyard landscapes. |

| I've had both C, H and full sensor cameras. I don't feel like there's much of a difference. |
