Very true Ray, I put that back in my post, It wasn't intentional
eta and I agree that I would NOT want to see only expert and minimal.

I don't understand this thinking at all. Several other users have won a ribbon over both of them in expert challenges but more to the point why feel like you shouldn't enter just because others may be better at expert editing. No reason anyone of us can't push ourselves to be better and so on. I love the competition it drives to to be better. But I also enter shots that are not mainstream but are appreciated by a target audience. Ribbons aren't everything.
Don't take this personally, it is not aimed at you but I had noticed several different comments by other users so this really is meant as a general statement. |
Rest easy, no offense taken :-) But still, my latest attempt at Expert ended up in the bottom 10. And notice how entries for Expert challenges tend to be pretty small. I adore both Judi's and gyaban's work, it's amazing, and I know they've both been beaten in Expert challenges by others. Certainly not trying to hold them back at all, but asking others to push themselves to learn and more importantly develop, some serious PS skills in order to compete....well is that fair? I know ribbons aren't everything or else I would have sold out yonks ago.
I shoot what I like, pp it as I like, and enter it and let the poor thing sink or swim. Some sink. Some tread water and stay afloat and finish well. Others effing well swim and do pretty frickin well.
Ok rant over :-)

Just a historical note: when paid membership was introduced and additional challenges scheduled, Langdon stated that the original features of the site would always be available: free registration and the option to enter one Basic rules challenge each week, so I doubt that that baseline operation of the site will ever go away. |

i gotta say, if there was no advanced editing that would push my partial absence over the edge and i would be gone for good. |

More "Minimal Editing" challenges, please.
The last one was on July 15 - and we have had 8 "Expert" since then... |

1. No more minimal editing challenges!
2. If there are, at least change the rules a little bit to allow raw and cropping. |

Minimal editing can't possibly happen with RAW: we have to edit our RAW images just to get them on the page, and they don't have any locked-in parameters until we edit them.
When you shoot in JPG-only mode, what you are doing, basically, is telling the camera "Okay, after I push the button I want you to take the RAW data and apply this much sharpening, this much saturation, this white balance, that amount of contrast, deliver the result to me ready-to-post, and toss the RAW so I can't change my mind!", and that's what it does. You make the decisions before you shoot, and in minimal editing you live by those decisions.
When we shoot RAW, we make those decisions after the fact, and we can go back to the "negative" any time we want and change the parameters. There's nothing "minimal" about it, it's more like "maximal"...

I'm with you Ken. I figured it out. The more ribbons a person wins the more it costs to stay on the site! Five ribbons the price doubles. 10 ribbons the price doubles again, and on and on.
STOP THE GREED NOW!
I'm the 99.

Have you looked at the equipment listed on most ribbon hog profiles? You're talking peanuts.

Nonono, instead of taxing ribbon winners, we should offer cash prizes for ribbons. Think of the increase in participation!! :) |

Yeah #3 was from an old thread as well but I forget which one. Reading your thread it looks like the argument against it was it may affect your eyes when you move from pic to pic. For example, when you go from a white matte background to a black one when voting. One solution could be to simply group all the grey, black and white backgrounds together, while keeping them random within each group.

Richard, I like that suggestion for your #3!!! I even use darker backgrounds when editing my photographs. As of late, it seems to be working fine! |
