I hate to say this, but for indoor sports your equipment is going to hold you back more and frustrate you more until you are able to upgrade some.
|
So, in order to take amazing indoor sports shots like MattO, all I need is:
Nikon D3s + 400mm f/2.8 lens
$5,199 + $6,799 = $11,998
...well, that and a couple of decades of experience taking sports shots.
I am not sure I can get my wife to buy into this dream. |
My sports photos are by no means phenomenal, but I think they are decent. And my gear is no where near that expensive. I use a 50D, a 50 1.4, and a 430EXII bounced off the ceiling. The flash makes all the difference.
A lot of teams freak out when I ask about using flash, but when I explain that the light will be bounced off the ceiling and won't blind them and all that, I can usually convince about 90% of coaches to give me the ok.
As for shooting soccer (I assume it's outside?), I'd go with the longest lens you have because those field are so large. Probably a good idea to have on good shoes and a light-weight gear bag because you'll be running the sidelines a lot if the teams are evenly matched. If you get a choice, pick the sideline that has the sun shining on faces. To get good face shots though, you'll have to be on the same side of the field as the goal.
For basketball, I usually use my 50 1.4 and the flash again. I'd definitely recommend getting a flash with some of the money you make from these gigs : ) |

Photos are done... I have on the thumbdrive over 500 photos.
I edited about 50 total. I am really excited to show him.
Personally I think my photos are better than his! Lol!!!
I know for a fact that I did a good job on the basketball photos... I got a few that are ESPN worthy... ;) Lol!
Thanks again for everyone's help!!! I am going to him today at noon to give him the thumbdrive. I am going to ask him about being able to share some of the photos with you all and I don't think he will be worried about it.

MORE BRAGGING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just got a text from him about an hour ago to go to the gym to talk to him. When I got there he told me that he is going to start hiring me more and more for the sports and then next year there is 90% chance that I will be taking over his job as the head athletic photographer for my school!!! Every sport, every home game, every head-shot of the players!!! He also said that he was going to get a slight raise starting next year so that raise will roll over to me!! :D :D
THESE PAST FEW DAYS HAVE BEEN SO FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so stoked!!! :D :D :D :D |

That is great news, congrats on the gig(s). But as the other user said before be mindful of knowing you need to get gear upgrades that will do you well, a lot of people say glass glass glass, but in your case you need to step up the body probably first... i would say work, borrow, beg, save until you can get a used D300 or D300s body, I used to have a D40.. the difference between the D40 (which is a fun camera and what I started on) and a D300s will change your life as it pertains to photography. External controls, speed... live tracking... wicked AF Areas... it will be awesome for the kind of jobs you are doing and not break the bank expensive like an FX.

I plan on saving for a D7000. I need to get that before any more glass. That I know for sure. I guess I could look into the differences between the D300s and the D7000.
Time to do some serious research! :D |

Good choice, the 7000 has the focusing motor and better noise control, plus more shots per second. That's a good thing when it makes the shot, but the "machine gun" approach will give you a sorting and editing headache.
I'm happy for you about the new gig!

D7000 shoots images at 6 fps, while D300s can shoot at 7 fps and can go up to 8 fps with the MB-D10 battery grip.
D7000 can bracket up to 3 frames, while D300s can bracket up to 9 frames.
When it comes to AF system and focus points, the Nikon D300s has a superior pro-level AF sensor with 51 focus points and 15 cross-type sensors, while D7000 has 39 focus points and 9 cross-type sensors.
D7000 Boasts Higher ISO, and seems to be true. I like the smarter AF and more AF areas of the D300s, video mode is never used by me. I also run the battery grip on the D300s so 8fps is nice for Motorcycle racing, etc... Also the D7000 is very small in my hands (6'5") so to all that I say... To each their own :)

Haha, very true.. always buy used but inspect it well! You can get a used D200 for $500 or less and that's a SOLID body, I loved mine... Only major downside is the ISO performance is not very good at all, IE It produces heavy noise over 800 ISO. D7000 sounds like your best bet, and if you can find used... even better bet! Good luck man. |

My significant other just switched from a D300s to a D7000... I would highly recommend the latter.. The high iso performance is much cleaner and the AF is just as good, if not better.. You will not be sorry if you get it.. With that said, the D300s was no slouch.. But for the $$$$, I'd say D7000. |

Haven't updated this thread since last semester so I thought I would go ahead and fill you in with what's going on with me!
I am the sports photographer at my school for every sport (except baseball). I am getting paid quite a pretty penny from the school which is very nice! And with my new D7000 I have gotten some REALLY good shots!
Tonight was the first day of photos for me. Both the men's and women's soccer teams played today and I shot for both! PLENTY of photos from tonight! Really excited about them, too! I was told that as soon as I want to I can post the photos to anywhere I want to promote myself and also let people at the school know that I am the photographer (and maybe get them to ask me to do photoshoots with them).
So after I edit a few from today, I will show you guys!
I'm really excited! :D |
