I am getting paranoid about a couple of ND filters, I am now questioning myself over sizes.

So for a

Canon 70-200 F2.8 I need a = 77mm filter?

and for a

Tamron AF 18-270mm = 72

Such a basic question, but I am doing a filter mad panic buying before my trip on Thursday!

Thanks guys!

Could it be the outside of the glass is 62 but the total width is 72?

I am now lost again

No worries. Just buy the 77mm sized filter and you got 90% of lenses covered. The Canon 16-35 is a rarer 82mm filter size. This way you don't need to carry the same filter in different sizes. You just need step up rings to fit a larger filter onto a smaller sized lens. The bigger 77mm is more expensive but is cheaper in the long run. An oversized filter is actually a good thing, less vignetting.

Get a 72->77 //www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/98873-REG/General_Brand_72_77_72mm_77mm_Step_Up_Ring_Lens.html and a 62->77 ring //www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/6269-REG/General_Brand_62_77_62mm_77mm_Step_Up_Ring_Lens.html and you're covered no matter what. The filter itself is already 77mm, so it will fit the 70-200 f2.8 without any extra rings.

Don't start doubting. You can do as Techno said, or you refer to the inside of the lens cap and you can be sure it will fit. Doesn't matter what you find on the net. You have your lens in your hands and that shows the correct size.

That is marvelous, thank you for explaining it too and the links.

My Tamron has it on the barrel of the lense also, mine is 62.

My Sony lenses have it on the front of the lens, and the back of the lens cap - shown as Ø55 for a 55mm filter thread etc

WARNING: for some reason the number inside a Tamron lens cap is NOT the same as the filter diameter the lens accepts. Look on the barrel of the lens for a circle with a vertical line through it followed by a number (Like Ø67). Our 28-75mm Tamron, for example, shows 67mm on the lens barrel as filter diameter, but it shows 87 inside the lens cap.

As far as I know all modern lenses have filter size on the lens itself, either on the ring around the barrel like the Tamron or, sometimes, around the perimeter of the front glass (where you can't see it if the lens cap is on). I think it depends on the lens design, some have ionset glass on the front and some of glass all the way to the edge practically.

Take a look at this page and see if that's your lens:

//www.tamron.com/en/photolens/di_II_all_in_one/b008.html

That's Tamron's official page and it says 62mm... Beyond that I haven't a clue.

And here on the review at DP Review, you can see clearly on the ;lens photo that it's marked 062...

But still, if yours actually honest-to-god for sure says "72" on it, maybe it's an older version of the lens, before the piezo motor version of 2010? How long have you had it?

DO you have any exiting filters, polarizing, UV etc. with sizes marked on them so you can actually "try" them and see if they fit, or at least narrow it down by process of elimination. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have this one

72 on side

Yup, that is the case: I found it. You have an earlier version and it is 72mm.

Right, we cross-posted. Confusing, but solved :-) Dang, you OWN that lens as far as DPC results LOL.

LOL, no I don't, the filters I do have are from 1971 and came with my F1. I have ever other single filter made in the world bar the 77 and 72
