dpreview have published full review on D70.
Seems that the results are very good (as many expected). Seems a lot better than D100 so it seems that it´s out of the marked.
The Rebel seems to have a real competitor there but I dont understand why the dont have ISO 100 setting on the Nikon.

People have commented on the forums there that in comparison with the 300D the Nikon seems much less sensitive in ISO terms - as much as 2/3 stop in some opinions. Given the apparent noise floor at 200, it doesn't look like it needs a 100 or slower - and anyway, if you can afford a grand for a camera, you can afford some ND filters.

That depends on what you are calling a competitor to the 300D. The Canon is still quite a bit cheaper, and has a much cheaper lens. The D70 is aimed at a slightly higher market. Also as for not having an ISO 100 rating -- how many situations do you know where you would need more than an eight thousandth of a second shutter at an F-22 aperture?

Is the 300D cheaper? At //www.warehouseexpress.co.uk the 300D is £10 cheaper (with a lens in both cases). At Jessops they're exactly the same price. And in a few other places I've just checked there is a £10 or so price difference.

Sounds like competition to me.

PS. UK sites mainly ... perhaps that isn't the case across the pond.

I know the situation hardly comes up that you shoot at shutter speed 1/8000 sec and it´s not even possible in 300D (think it has a maximum shutter speed 1/4000 sec.).
But I would realy like to see controled comparison of the noise from D70 at ISO 200 and 300D at ISO 100.

I can't speak for anywhere but Japan. Here, the price differential works out at around 200 pounds sterling for the kit prices. (yen 160,000 D70: 140,000 Kiss/ Rebel/ 300D).

At the weekend, the sun was very strong. The 1/8000 shutter speed did come in handy, rather than reach for an ND filter.

Having ISO100 to cut the EV by a stop does the same as going from 1/4000 to 1/8000s. I guess that that is one of the reasons why it can do that shutterspeed btw. Had the same problem with the S602, IS0160 limit, wanting to shoot an outdoor Macro wideopen needed 1/10.000s shutter.

I think the D70 is a great camera, image quality equal to the 300D /10D. Looking at the dpreview crops from one frame of each camera I personally see weaknesses and strengths for bot of them that cancel eachother out. Great features, nice body. But for me it is still that Nikon does not have the lenses I want at the price i want.

Fotunately this will push Canon to make something better. :)

From memory, does not the dpreview article show noise from 300D at IS100? Can't be botherd to go hunting it out though ...

Think you are going the wrong way - people might like an ISO 100 to be able to shoot in bright light at slowish shutter speeds, or with more open apertures
