If you want water and shock resistance then you will be limited to that group of cameras. Of those I have tried the Pentax, Olympus, Fuji and Canon. I settled on the Canon D10 as taking the best shots overall. It is limited however to no manual controls to speak of and 3X zoom. But it is tough. I take it snorkeling, hiking, mountain climbing and have dropped it on rocks and had it slide down a glacier all without harm.
If the water / shock thing is not so much an issue there are quite a few of the new CMOS point and shoots coming out. I have been trying them and currently I'm testing a Canon SX230 HS with pretty good results. Problem is you get spoiled shooting a DSLR and can't quite be satisfied with a P&S. So far the biggest issue with the Canon 230 HS is no RAW format.
Lastly I'm sure you know about DPReview.com. They do a great job reviewing all the new camera coming to market.
Hope that helps. |

The two are (for now) mutually exclusive.
If you want low-light capability and great IQ, go for the Canon S95... Otherwise, go for a shock/water resistant cam. |

Canon just announced the S100. It's got a lot going for it. |

I have this camera and I can absolutely testify that it is shockproof and waterproof.
I have NOT been kind to this camera. I have dropped it at least 3 times on hard stone floor, where it bounced hard, and it still worked completely fine after wards. I have taken it into the ocean, I have taken it into the lake, I even once took it into a hot spring (though that time I was careful not to put under for too long). Still works completely fine.
Underwater pictures do not have great quality, but I can assure you that taking them underwater will not break them. |

Sony
I got this for my wife, as she is rough on electronics, and when she isn't losing them, she's dropping them in toilets.
It's waterproof. The front plate slides up to cover the lens. The entire back is a touchscreen, which makes cruising menus and reviewing shots really sweet.
I used it for all the low angle shots in this kayak video. The video from up higher behind me was shot using my Samsung WB2000, which is not waterproof.
Here's a photo with the Sony I took while making the above video:

The wife was disappointed I didn't fall in at the end.
