IS STUPID?!?!?!

The people at this school suck. I know 1... ONE.. person at this school with a brain. That is pathetic.

Here is my little rant that put me over the edge today.

Today I went to class just like any other day.. Went to financial aid to figure out how many meals I get a week on my meal plan. Not a big deal... Here is where it gets interesting. I guess I didn't go to a meeting that I didn't know about and because of that I have to pay the school a fine.

Yes, a fine for not showing up to a meeting that they didn't tell me about. No e-mail or anything.

Is this even legal?

Not to mention that she was completely rude to me even before I walked into her office.

Just another added bonus as to why I am on the computer 24/7 with you all. People here have a brain (most of you anyways lol).

Okay.. That is my rant... You may go on with your lives now! :)

Haha, welcome to big business education.

I went to university in Canada, and the Administration building is an entirely different beast. Probably from having to deal with snotty arts undergrads all day. Once you stream off into a specialty, admin happens in the corresponding academic building (for me it did). Those people are wonderful, and it definitely helps to have them as allies.

Pisser about the fine. How much is it? Back in the day, I was always scraping for every penny I could get so I could afford a coffee in the afternoon.

Be nice to them, though. You catch more flies with honey, and one day they may send you to the money room, where they will hand you a big cheque from some little-known bursary. ;-)

It is a $25 fine.

Can I even fight this?

I am broke... In fact I am in debt! $25 goes a long way with food. Specially for me who knows all the little sales that places have.

I dunno... Does your school have an Ombudsman? Take a look through your directory. Back in the day $25 would buy a case of fine Canadian lager!

It was a meeting for people who live in the dorms. It happened about a week ago. They didn't even tell me I had the fine until I went in today to ask them about my meal plan.

Maybe you should go back and ask them for a list of other meetings you are required to attend but which they are not going to announce.

Since you were inquiring about your meal plan, perhaps you can remit the fine in pancakes ...

I recently read this somewhere: "Pull up your big girl panties and deal with it."

I'm not unsympathetic, marKo. I just like giving you a hard time. So on the upside, be thankful I don't work in your administration office.

I would put on my big girl panties and FIGHT THIS.

But, politely. :D

Ask them how you were notified about the meeting. Also ask them if there was a fine notification for not attending before you didn't attend.

Then ask them (still politely) how one airs grievances against the system.

$25 is $25. That's a bunch of money for missing a meeting that you didn't know about.

If you were told ahead of time in a proper manner about the meeting and the fine... then well... all you've got is your big girl panties. Wear them with pride.

And keep them dry. :D

Thanks for all the help guys!

I am going to financial aid tomorrow to schedule a meeting so that I can get this squared away.

I went from a small private high school, where the staff truly cared about me and all the students. Then I went to a large (26,000 students) university where no one cared if I lived or died. At university I learned quite a few things, but mostly I learned how to deal with a bureaucracy. You can't wage war with the machine, and you can't blame the cogs in the machine for only spinning in one direction. It is their job to do only what they do.

When you talk to on of these cogs, understand that they probably hate the machine as much as you do and they see you as another cog. Deal with them on the level of understanding that they have a job to do, but someone else up the line threw a wrench in the system, and now we have to fix it, or at least figure out what when wrong to make this mess so it doesn't happen next time. Who sends out the notifications about the meetings, and who messed up in not getting that notification to you? Make it clear in word deed and action that you are not in any way blaming the person who is in front of you. We are all happy cogs in the machine, trying to make the system work more smoothly. Once you set a tone of co-operative team player who understands the limits of action available to the person in front of you things tend to get unstuck. The person who collects the fine does not impose the fine. The person who imposes the fine is not the person who writes the rules. So the mindset needed to deal with the beast is that no one is to blame, we just need to fix some small error that happened somehow. It does nothing to help the rage at the stupidity of it all, but it the only way to work in the belly of the machine.

Continue on calmly from person to person to chase down the error, eventually you will find some human being in the machine who likes your attitude and will pull some hidden lever and fix the problem.

Read Max Weber on bureaucracy or at least this capusle summary

The "good" thing here is that by end of semester when the meal plan expires and everyone looses a shit-ton of meals everyone you know will buy you as much food as you can eat, as a result, those who've been around a while and are still dorm-hounds will be glad to supplement your food allotment if you'd like more - essentially no-one ever uses all of their meal plan. And of course, that's the shittiest part - the school makes great money off of that little scheme.

Not to be a jerk, but how did everyone else know about the meeting?

Maybe this comment by the OP might explain things a tad:

"Just another added bonus as to why I am on the computer 24/7 with you all" :O)
