[quote=Strikeslip] My neighbors across the street have a collar for their dog that shocks it if it barks. I don't know how it might work for whining.
DO NOT use a shock collar for whining, this will only re-enforce his whining. Please DO NOT use the collar.
i have a 8 week old puppy and im gradually getting him used to being alone.
Try play toys that stimulate the mind, with the breed you have they are high energy so alot of excerise and mental stimulation should do the trick.
As for your neighbours, i think 1 week ultimatum is OUTRAGEOUS!!! you should explain to them this will not be long term.
Good luck. |

I think if they wanted this type of response they would've called their mother.....

Too many people go out and buy a puppy without any idea of what they're getting into. I've lived next to people who have done just what the OP seems to have done; bought a puppy, then leave it cooped up in their house, bored, whining and crying all day to annoy the neighbors. The ONLY ones I have sympathy for are the puppy and the neighbors. |
+34 1/2...
Seriously, if you don't have a reason to own the animal (working dog, cattle rancher, service animal, etc.) then it's life is to simply be a "toy" for you.. Kinda sad really - no purpose in life.
Secondly, dogs need room to run play and live - an apartment in the city is a shitty place for a dog - it should honestly be illegal - for the good of everyone.
There, now you have my opinion... |

We have a rescue Cocker Spaniel (Joey)...great little dog but a bit high strung. The reason he was put up for adoption was previous owner had to leave him alone during the day and he wouold go about tearing up evrything in sight...chewing up baseboards, doors, etc. He had been doing the same with us, if we leave him alone and he has a major fear of thrunderstorms...major shakes. Then we heard about ThunderShirt...and I thought yeah, right! But it was a low cost option and the reviews were pretty consistent and very positive. So we tried it and for a while seemed to have no effect (other than when we put it on him he assumed things were gonna get bad so went into early anxiety shakes). Now we put it on him at random times, whether we are leaving the house or there is a storm or not. It has taken a few weeks but seems to be working now. Last couple of times we left the house, the house was intact when we returned and last week during a big storm he just laid down, relaxed, and no shakes.
Not saying this would work but might be an easy try (and no, I am not associated with the company that sells them).
Good Luck! |

By this point the OP's puppy is 3-1/2 years old. If it hasn't stopped whining by now, just give up. |

And sucka #2 (me) came in to drop his $0.02 ... Really though, I don't get why people in the freaking city think they need a dog - half of the parks in Miami smell strongly of dog piss and shit - makes me want to lobby for a law banning dogs in the city. At least cats shit in a box and bury their business. |

I have a spotty internet connection, but I agree that cats should be buried in a box in the city. |

Figures you three would be actively participating in this zombie thread, lol.
As for whining puppies. Go to the store, buy a wind up clock, one that ticks loud, and put is where he sleeps. Works like a charm at calming puppies down. |

For a week leave the house for about 10 minutes 2 times a day, pet her, kiss her and tell her bye. Then when you come back do the same. Pet her, kiss her and talk to her with a high pitch "baby" voice. When she is in trouble raise your voice and point at her. This will let her know that she has done something wrong or is in trouble. During week 2 leave the house for 30 minutes twice daily doing and saying the same thing over and over and over. Dogs learn by doing good and the tone of your voice. 3rd week 1 hour. After that she will understand that when you leave you will ALWAYS come back.
The first week she will cry when you guys leave. Be strong and do the same thing over and over. She will learn. |
this is called "desensitizing" and works well...it takes time but this is very good advice...we have a dog that suffers from separation anxiety. When we first got him...I would do this all day long - off and on in varying intervals to "desensitize" him for the times when I would have to leave the house...sometimes I would actually leave, other times not. And I always gave (still do) him a small treat every time he would go to the crate when I said "crate". There are no longer problems with this...but it did take a little bit of time...work with the puppy everyday all day long.
Another good piece of advice that I got from someone was to always feed him/her in the crate...that way it becomes a "good place" or "a place they want to go to" not a place only for when you leave or they are bad. |

Two things:
A place to hide (open crate with blanket over it, etc...)
Leave one of your husband/your own recently worn shirts (T-shirt)
This does help. I would leave my dogs home they cried but the crate and comfort shirt helped a lot.
Hope that helps.
Edited to add this: forehead slaps.... didn't read orig. Thread date :-)

Can't teach an old dog new tricks. Old threads though,,,,,,,maybe.
My solution to the OP would be to move to a house next to a vet's office and kennel. There would be so many dogs barking all the time that no one would notice one more.

Fill a kong with peanut butter and kibble, give just as you are leaving! Also if you are not already crate train, cover the crate with a blanket so that it is cave like and leave the radio on, leave her with safe toys for company. this worked with my german shepherd who is now 8 months. Remember a tired puppy is a good puppy, teach her to sit etc. to mentally tire her as well as excercise to physically tire her, |
