A friend is selling her D300 for $750 (great price I believe - they go for about $850 at Amazon). I am debating if its worth the upgrade!

Any suggestions to make the decision process easier for me.

D300 is superb.
The tremendous difference is the AF and AF areas (51).
I wouldn't even hesitate to make that move.

OMG YES! Not only the AF areas, but the frames per second (something like 6 to 8!) and the bracketing (9 vs. 3) are killer features, especially if you do HDR stuff. I just started shooting with my D80 as an extra after 1.5 years of the D300s and my first thought was, 'ugh, what a dog this camera is...' Of course it is NOT a dog, but the D300 is superior :-) IMHO.

Thanks Nick and Colleen!
So there is a noticeable difference in focusing (both speed and precision) in the D300 vs the D80?

Just a note is the older D300 and not the D300s.

If funds are available, I would make that move in a heartbeat for the reasons given above.

Considering its your friend might you be able to borrow it for a week before purchasing it?

There are a fair amount of differences between the D300 and the D300s.....check your specs...I'd hold out for a deal on the D300s were I in your shoes.

I have to agree there... I have a D300 and a D300s, and the "s" has a multitude of improvements over the older version.

This is what I was worried about, while the D300 was a great camera when it was introduced and is a definite step up for me, I should wait for the D300s to come to a price point I am comfortable buying!

Thank you everyone!
