There's this thing I had been wanting to do for about 20, 25 years, and when my 13-year-old son told me he was going to get to do it while on a week-long Boy Scout trip, I decided that I had waited long enough.
So I decided to make a little road trip...
Well, maybe âlittleâ is an understatement. I woke my daughter up at the crack of dawn to make a 10-hour round trip up to Mill Run, PA to visit a couple of Frank Lloyd Wright creations, Kentuck Knob and Fallingwater. Beau's scout troop was camping out at Ohiopyle State Park, doing 150 miles of cycling on the Great Alleghany Passage, as well as taking in local attractions (like white water rafting and visiting the FLW houses). We managed to catch up with them at Fallingwater. For Lexa and I, it was a long day made short by great company, great weather, and the breathtaking experience of walking through his masterpiece.
Itâs everything I imagined and more. Itâs one thing to see photos; itâs so much more to see it in person, especially just to feel the space, to hear the waterfalls, and to appreciate just how much went into creating it. Simply mind-blowing. Lexa and Beau were both pretty much blown away by it. Theyâd both seen pictures (I have a lot of FLW books), but they had no idea just how incredible it would be.
For me, I took away a photo that is taken 100-500 times a day almost every day of the year.
What might make this a little different than the other bazillion similar images is that I shot mine at f/9, iso250, handheld at 1/40 with my 70-200 (yeah, the IS made a difference). (I didn't have a tripod because I wouldn't have been able to take it into the house for the tour.)
Imagine my absolute bewilderment, though, to see in Life's just published update to America the Beautiful, on page 29, this photo flipped horizontal! Unbelievable! Talk about taking liberties, this is mind-boggling.
Anyways, there are some more of what I shot here. |

Life's photo sucked. Yours is much better. Too bad you couldn't get a private tour of the grounds so you didn't have people in the pic (or at least could have posed any people). |

Maybe the Life photographer exists in a mirror-image universe. |

thanks, nathan, but to be fair, i used my droid to photograph the photo in the magazine. it's not bad in the book, it's just wrong (imho)
;-)
you wouldn't believe the hoops you have to jump through to get anything close to a 'private tour' for photography. the owners (the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy) do an incredible job of preserving and maintaining this property, as well as making it available to the public (true to the wishes of the Kaufmanns - the only family to own and inhabit the residence). on the other hand, if you're patient and willing to wait you can get that shot without people (or you could just 'shop it).

more likely, it's the photo editor in the mirror-image universe ;-)

i'll probably write Time-Life a note. as someone pointed out to me, back in the day it was pretty easy to "flip a transparency". just surprising that instance would slip by. |

Lovely photo essay, Skip. As usual.
I also am a great fan of FLW's work and have visited the Hanna House here in Palo Alto, and also, of course the Marin Civic Center (built from his plans; he didn't live to see it)'
Fallingwater has always been on my 'list' to see, but never made it while on the east coast.

I suspect that Life magazine was probably working with negatives, and that one just happened to get processed backwards. Probably completely by accident. (I don't imagine that everyone working for the magazine has gone to see the property.)
It happens.

The mag shot looks like an older color slide or maybe a med or large format shot to me. Maybe they just used one from stock that they had from years ago, and flipped the slide or neg. I couldn't imagine that they would purposely flip a digital file that way. Maybe the art dept. thought that it would look more pleasing with the composition reversed.
I agree, that your shot is much better, and at a nicer looking time of year as well. The people in the shot don't bother me. It just looks like there's a party in progress.

Perhaps but it actually looks better that way, IMO.

I took a tour of the house about 7 years ago, it's absolutely beautiful!
I love FLWâs work.
