I'd like to see more challenges that deal with photography topics.

Landscapes, Portraits, Rule of Thirds, Motion, macros, etc.

But mix it up a bit. For instance, Portrait of man outdoors, or macros of flowers only. Stuff like that. I believe if there were more traditional photography related themes, we'd get more entries.

Any other thoughts?

If more participation is what they want. Tell them to bring back the one thing that really brought entries and competition to the table. DPL!

I like your idea. I think it would allow people to be more creative. If people really want to succeed in macro flowers...they need to step out of the box and develop some concept instead of "ooo! pretty colors!!1!!" And such a general topic like that opens it up for a lot of creativity.

I like the idea. It will keep the challenge interpretation to a minimum and allow for better learning through comparison of the other entries. I definitely could use some basic element portfolio building/experience and some restriction on the topic/theme could prove to be more challenging in order to achieve great or top performing results.

ETA: Maybe to make it happen sooner and more often it could be a semi-regular side challenge.

I've always thought this made sense. Back when they first initiated the "exclusive open" challenges, I thought this was a golden opportunity to have one challenge every week that was traditional, photography-based, working on fundamental skill sets, and another that was more quirky, but it didn't work out that way.

Now we have two member's challenges a week, and I'm feeling the same way, that it's an opportunity wasted. I don't think there's anything wrong with hosting a regular rotation of classic photographic themes. As far as I'm concerned, we go way overboard on "gimmick" challenges.

Brilliant idea. It will definitely help out people who are still improving as well, as some challenges, I find, are a bit daunting as you know people are just going to come up with incredible entries that you will never be able to contend with. Whereas more of a simple concept sometimes would definitely rake in more entries.

I like. Since it's hard to get photography theme challenges selected maybe all of these themes should unite. Here's a few I've suggested in the past:

Candid Portrait
OOF Challenge
Pinhole Challenge
Landscape Challenges (with a twist)
Masters of Photography Series - Selected once (i.e. HCB challenge). Ok maybe twice, if you count Louis' suggestion of the Weston challenge. Either way, more please!

Oh and then there's the best non-yanko suggestion that's sorta related:

Film Noir

It seems to me that we go through cycles of some challenges that are slightly quirkier, then we seem to have a run of fundamentals based stuff. The fundamentals are certainly easier to find something for. Many of them are not too far off from being freestudies. I do agree they often seem to be bunched up.

I agree that these challenges make better for learning concepts of photography.
I don't think the site is completely ignoring these topics though...I mean we've had Sepia, High/Low Key, and Symbolic Still Life very recently.

Agreed!

Many of the latest set of challenges have been very quirky and specific.

My entry in Six Word Memoirs " Another challenge that holds no interest."
