I made a shot today that I'm thinking of entering for the NG challenge, but I'm not sure if folks will 'get it'. Anyone willing to have a look and give me their opinion? Happy to reciprocate if you like.
Cheers,

Seems to me that plenty of NG photos were of "stuff" and not the people who made it ... |

Going on a roadtrip today and tomorrow to see if I can get a shot for this one.

I am lucky to have a decent entry. Only because, of the kindness of a stranger. Going out of their way, to show me a shooting spot.
It's so nice to see that kindness. So thank you to that stranger. Who I followed for 10 kilometres in my Altima. Oh and he drove dam fast! Doing 110 in 80's!
So it gave a bit of a challenge! lol Well worth a speeding ticket regardless. Oh and don't worry, not my normal driving speed.

I hadn't intended to enter this challenge (despite living in a national park) but something turned up in my backyard that I manage to get a shot of that I̢۪m not unhappy with. It is by no means a great shot and I̢۪m expecting to finish in the bottom 10%. My problem is I just don̢۪t know how to PP properly. I might put the shot up after voting to see if some of you experts can produce something good from it. Anyway, I̢۪m looking forward to voting on this challenge in a couple of days.

Today was a bust, doing another one in a different direction tomorrow, hopefully that will yield better results.

Why not ask someone for help before the challenge? I'm sure someone would help, then not vote on it, there's nothing illegal about it. I'm getting ready to head out for the day, but if you upload a full size unedited image in your workshop and pm me the number I'll be happy to look at it tonight. Not that I'm an expert or anything, but sometimes it's good to have some advice or opinions before you submit. |

I see this as "travel photography," not "animal photography." So I agree with the folks who've suggested showing something that's place-based or shows something about a culture. Not photojournalism in the sense of "immediate news," but definitely not just wildlife photography. |

Ha! :)
Wildlife, too. Just not "solely" wildlife. |

I have read NG ever since I could. My fathers collection goes back 4 decades and he still subscribes now. It's one of the reasons I (and many others) got into photography, me specifically wildlife/nature. However the photography in NG is as diverse as Bill Gates hanging in a tree in a forest over a stack of paper to indicate how much paper would be saved thanks to CD-ROMS (set-up shot) as it is to a cell splitting under a microscope. I hope that ALL the images entered will be judged with this in mind and not just by the more narrow POV of nature/african tribes spoken of earlier :)
Just to add: I don't understand how this challenge could be Advanced Editing. It should be Basic. NG do not allow PP on images entered into their on-line competitions and if you read the blogs of NG staff 'togs or hired 'togs, PP is a no-no.

I consider this to be a free study. NG publishes pictures of everything -- wildlife, bugs, people, food, trees, fish, goats, elephants, tigers, zebras, buildings, landscapes, seascapes, oil rigs... You name it. If it has to do with the story, it gets published. |

Really? I have pretty large skepticism that this is true. For instance:
//photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photos/best-pod-june-09/#/football-stadium-colorado_3571_600x450.jpg
I know that is not necessarily a contest or magazine photo, but it's on their website and they talk specifically in the photo description about using HDR.

Hi Mike, some entries to NG have been disqualified in the past after other entrants questioned the validity and NG asked for the original image. Here is a cut and paste of amended rules I have just sniffed from their site:
"Minor burning, dodging and/or color correction is acceptable. Hand tinting is acceptable, as is cropping. Fisheye lenses are acceptable. High dynamic range images (HDR) and stitched panoramas are acceptable only if the combined parts are all made around the same time. Any changes to the original Photograph not itemized here are unacceptable and will render the Photograph ineligible for a prize."
This is wrt their current Traveler 2011 Competition.

Thanks for finding that, very helpful!
So it really seems like the rules should have been a hybrid of Advanced and Basic. Allow for selective editing and HDR, but don't allow cloning other than sensor dust removal.
Either way, no big deal. I'm just excited to see all of the entries in this contest :) |

I have entered an image which I truly love. I dread the voting on this one, because it is not going to be judged to be NGM quality, stature or scope. Such is the current state of the voters' mindset. It's sad and I think it's suppressing challenge entries. I may remove mine before the deadline.

I agree. I can see mine in NG magazine, but the voters here have me worried. I'm thinking it's going to get slammed and I'm trying to decide if I want to go through that all week. |
