So for the last few weeks I have been helping my hubby play Mario on the Wii as we had made a deal that once he had completed it I could then go and buy Lego Pirates. Yesterday we finished Mario, today I went around the shops but everywhere had sold out.
Now I could have waited, put the money aside, kept looking around different shops in different areas, left it until I found the game (which I really want).
But no...
I have come home with a shutter release cable for my camera.
How do I explain that to my hubby? (Who, by the way, hates me spending money as we dont really have alot (1 income, 4 kids)especially as all I have talked about for weeks is getting this new game?
In all fairness, the cable was $55 but she got it down to $45 for me and the game would of been $60, but still...I have no game.
Does this sort of thing happen to anyone else?
I am very happy that I have a new toy and I am sure we will have many happy times together, sharing great photographic experiences, travelling around and seeing some fantastic sights, but it is not a game. I now have to think of a new way of getting my hubby to part with the money!

On another note...why do you need the cable? Doesn't that D5000 have a self timer? I know I'm a dope at times, but doesn't the cable do about the same as the self timer?
:)

I want to learn/practice long exposures (night photography/star trails)in bulb mode and I dont want to stand with my finger on the button. The cable has a lock on it so I can leave the shutter open for as long as I want.
Now I just need the clouds to go away!

New camera equipment means you have to get up out of the chair, away from the Wii, to get out and get some fresh air. ;o)

I used one of these on my D70 and now have a cable release on my D300. While at a basic level they do the same thing the cable is a lot more reliable and capable of doing some really fancy setups.

That is what the girl said in the shop, she had bought a wireless control, tried it out, bought it straight back and swapped it for a cable.

Never ask the barber if you need a haircut, the answer is always "yes." ;)
I just linked it because your post was mentioning money being tight. Being in that same situation, I've gone with the cheap alternative and haven't been disappointed. It's come in handy for family group shots, too. No more running to get in the frame, although you can't be too far camera-right. |

| I just purchased a cable release from ebay for my 60d. It's more than just a release, it has a timer, repeat, and interval settings. Only $25 mailed. Haven't had a chance to really test it yet but all seems to be working fine so far. |

Not true as long as the shutter release cable reaches the chair. |

Oh, well thanks for all the comments!
I told hubby that I have brought 'something for the camera' instead of a game and he said...'right'
I then went on (a little later) that I need to buy a bottle of 'absolut' vodka and he said 'oh, ok'.
Go figure...

I still you will get more use out of a remote cable...at least I do. There are instances where I want to set my camera up a far distance from where I am and a cable wouldn't reach. Three examples of when I've done that is for a family portrait where I was in it and wanted to take a few shots in a row (the timer would have been a pain). Also, I once set my camera up near a bird feeder (don't have a nice 400mm+ lens). Finally for the camera bag challenge, I shot it from a far distance with the remote trigger so I could try different poses. Again, the timer would have increased the pain. :)

Let me get this straight. You have 4 kids and you have time to play a Wii and take pictures. How?
I have 3 kids and there isn't time for anything. I must be doing something wrong. |

There are definitely times when I use my remote (hand not cable, I think although that the cable is better) vs hitting the button as it adds just enough movement to effect the sharpness, plus I don't have to run back and forth for each picture (timer)... ;) |
