I was on vacation this weekend and i started taking pictures and noticed that my meter was overexposing every picture by at least 5-10 stops. i have tried various settings on the camera and even updated the firmware and nothing has changed. has anyone run into this problem or know of someone that has? and is this something that is fixed easily or is it a big hassle?

This may sound dumb, but have you checked the lens?
I had a F/2.0 lens once that had the aperature get stuck - it was firing at F/2.0 no matter what I had the metering set to. So for shots that I was trying to shoot at F/5.6 and up, they were completely blown out.
Anyway, just a thought. Might not apply at all in your case. |

is it ok if you're in manual mode? in other words, it's just the metering? |

This may also sound dumb... but have you checked if you've accidentally set exposure compensation way up (it's easy to accidentally turn the thumb dial, lol).
Also what metering mode were you in and what kind of shots were you shooting (any samples to see)?

none of those would account for 5-10 stops...you can only compensate for exposure at +-2 stops

My 300D is at Canon right now.
Not sure what the problem is but there are curved lines down the center of the pics.
Hope to get it back quickly....I miss it :(

Josh will probably read this later anyway, but he is getting his camera back repaired for free in 10 days from canon. |

This may be a dumb question but did you check the White Balance setting?
You weren't using a custom white balance were you?

Just wanted to mention that Canon was fast on my repair.
I dropped it off on Friday afternoon, and I just got the call that it is ready.
Of course when you have to ship it it takes longer, but I am lucky enough to live within 30 minutes from a repair facility.

Wow, that is fast Terry...
So if I ever need repair work done I should mail mine to you and have you run it over there for me & save me the 4-6 week turn around my local shop told me to expect :)
Did they let you know what caused your problem?

I will find out tomorrow what the problem was(when I pick it up), but it was all covered under warranty so its all good.
