Ok, this was something was bothering me for sometime now. Let's see what you think.

I see wedding photographers, guys, and some other school photographers (like me) wearing ties while photographing. Here is what my thoughts about ties: "They are not designed for photographers", and here is why. Weddings or school, we have some cords hanging from our bellies, floor, from our cameras... which makes it pretty much annoying to deal with. include a tie between me and camera, is not fun at all. I move a lot during shooting, and tie moves itself with its own mind.

So, simply, I hated wearing ties if I go any shooting. I want to impress people with my ability to take good pictures, not with my tie. However most photographers disagree with me. Are you one of them?

... and I am not asking going those events with jeans and t-shirts either, something very nice always do fine for me.

Forget the tie. Just make sure you're packing heat. ;-)

I recommend a bow tie. Problem solved.

Try wearing a tie while working on copiers. There's an accident begging to happen. But it was the requirement in the office equipment trade for many years. Thankfully, most companies have moved away from that.

Do you wear a tie clip or pin? That may or may not help, but at least most of the tie will be laying flat when you move and prevent some of your tangling problems.

No tie? How you gonna clean your lenses right before the important shots? ;-)

I'd just do a quick spit-polish with my shirttail ΓΆ€” preferably BEFORE eating the Doritos 'n dip...

Personally, I'd skip the tie and wear a dress. :P

I honestly couldn't tell you whether the photographer was weearing a tie or not at any of the weddings that I have attended and normally more casual for schools.
You will not get recommendations due to your tie being your best asset, your photos will speak for themselves.
No on is going to talk about your photography and say "yeah, his photos are brill, he has a certain way of knowing just where to be, I love his uniqueness but he doesn't wear a tie"
Your best bet is to ask your client if they have a preference (it is their big day after all)chances are they haven't even thought about it and if need be get a tie clip.

I really, really emphasize with you, having never figured out why guys would decorate
their necks & chests with such an unusual bit of whimsy.

For essentially the same reason that women wear high heels, I assume?

But we know that we look sexy in high heels. There's no purpose for a tie, except to grab and guy and haul him around by it. :P

Spoken by a woman who never wears heels, to a guy who never wears ties :-)

Is this turning into a battle of the sexes?

Descends from from the days of knights and their ladies. Supposedly it represents the scarves or colors of the ladies that men of honor once wore into contest and battle.

hehe! You're right. :D

In answer to the OP's question:

Go for comfort (emotion or physical)

I find that I do much better work when I comfortable. That's what is important. It goes along with karmat's advice of wearing comfortable underwear. :)

Ah, yes. Sort of along the lines of it's traditional,
We've always done it that way."
:))

And yes, back to the fashion statement of a working photographer.
IMO, just go with what's comfortable and fits in with the crowd.

I don't even own a tie. But them I'm not doing weddings. I have done some senior pictures, but then I'm usually in jeans and a t-shirt.
