Maybe dpchallenge could add automatically add a subtle, nice-looking (if possible!) "dpchallenge" watermark to images submitted for challenges? It's sad that something like this has to be looked at, but at least it helps identify the source of the image if copied... |

Unfortunately it either has to be intrusive enough to ruin the picture or is easy enough to remove. This is why digital watermarking is relatively hard to see and is included in the noise/ low bit data in the image. The idea isn't to stop copying, it is to allow you to prove an image has been misappropriated.
There really isn't a good solution if you actually want people to be able to see the image effectively. There are plenty of good solutions that involve ruining the viewing experience. DRM is quite a tricky subject to get the balance right between screwing the legitimate users and blocking infringers. |

I saw that yesterday. Found it quite ironic since she's the one that broke the law. Although it also looks like she could be hitting herself in the head for being so stupid.....lol

The funniest part of that is that the 'photographer' on DA is explaining how 'she' took it in the comments...

I noticed that there is a giant forum there, just talking about "rips." People getting their artwork taken by other members, etc. SOunds common. Anyone on there, confirm? And have you posted anything about HER?

this is really outrageous! since this is my first real encounter with the copywrite infringement issue, i am amazed and saddened. i guess it's not that all common.
as far as "warning" versus "expulsion" wouldn't each photo count separately. shouldn't she be GONE! i would think the admins at DA would want her off their site. bad stain, no?

If you look more closely, you'll see that the rips forum is about people stealing work from DA and posting it on other web sites, and not about people on DA stealing it themselves - in fact, those sorts of posts get removed.

well... to me it seems like if "rippers" are very welcome on certain websites...
they require them to "break the law" twice before banning them (one is not enough?? why??)....
besides.. I think is quite a waste of time taking care of these guys, even legally... they are immature and they will always be so.. it's in their DNA.

YES!! she still has the "i love you" one up there!! here is the link to it at corbis. //pro.corbis.com/search/searchFrame.asp
i think a lot of people are following this because i just tried to get to her page and was blocked (subscribers only due to high volume) and it appears that the "i love you " photo is getting a lot of hits at corbis b/c it is moving higher up the page.

That only really points back to your last search - you need to search for 'i love you' on that page to see the offending image. Also interesting to notice that if it was taken from there, she either has an account with corbis or got it somewhere else.

Since the I love you image is listed as a royalty free image, I doubt there is anything they can do about that one...cept point out that it isn't hers unless she can prove that she sold it's useage to Corbis.

Royalty free doesn't mean copyright free though. It just means you only have to pay for it once (at $49 ) and don't have to pay for it each time you use it after that.

I know it is still copyright infringment Gordon, but in a way that many will not take the time to pove since it is a widely distributed photo.

Gordon stated
I also tried the 4 image version - that took 4 mouse clicks to reassemble in photoshop - just drag it straight into the application, scale one image by 100% in both directions then drop the 4 sections in to place - they automatically line up.
Hi Gordon -
I know that anyone who knows anything about photo imaging software can easily "steal" my tiled images and reassemble them - but I also know that relatively few people looking at my site would probably choose to do so. (I like that you chose my least favorite image, LOL) The other thing is, though, that I can choose the resolution for my images, and while some could certainly be used online, they could not be turned into decent prints.

Preventing "right clicking" on this website is a good idea too... to protect OUR works. Also, DPC should just come up with a rule that for every submission, the original be sent attached IMO. I'm just appalled with these kind people!

no - but i sent the message about images belonging to 3 different people i know. subsequently whitereflections has deleted them, but i would still presume the server admins would have a record of those

Preventing right clicking seems to work fine in IE 6 but not with Netscape 7/7.1. |
