I heard today that Canon had stopped producing the 10D. Anyone else heard about that? |

When it is on the front page of DPReview.com or RobGalbraith.com, I'll believe it. =] Until then, I'd consider it just speculation (which actually has been going on for some time). Some people are equating the fact that they are hard to get right now with the fact that Canon has stopped production. While I suppose that is a possibility, the one thing to remember is that the 1Ds has been in short supply ever since it was introduced, and it is still a "current" camera...
Perhaps Canon has had to adjust their production ratios to meet the demand for the Digital Rebel, and the new 1D Mark II, and the 10D is getting the short end of the stick. The only people that really know is Canon, and I doubt they are saying anything...

It could be just a speculation. Although here in Germany it is virtually impossible to buy a 10D anymore. We'll have to see if there's anymore news in the near future. |

I think canon already announced that they'd ramp-ed production on the 300D so it isn't too surprising that they'd squeeze less popular product lines - there is only so much capacity to go around (as the semiconductor hits a new round of capacity shortages...)

I'm wondering if Canon will bring out an 8 megapixel consumer version of the 1D Mark II, like they did with the 300D for the 10D. Could be a good step, I'd wait for it for sure! |

I'm stuck. I'm ready for a D-SLR and I want the 10D, but I'd hate to get one then hear that the new 10D is on the way. That would be just my luck.

The market is getting very interesting! There's alot of room between the 10D and the 1DmkII, a market space begging to be filled.
The Nikon D70 feature set encroaches on the 10D, while the pricing attracts buyers who would consider the D-Rebel. I predict Canon will act by introducing a new model between the 10D and the 1DMKII, as well as releasing a revamped version of the 10D to gain some separation from the D70. I think Gary is on the right track with his thinking as to where a new intermediate model might be derived from.
So much fun to speculate!

I heard this rumor back in January, two days after I bought a 10D. I called Canon to ask some tech questions and the guy on the phone had been there 20 years. He said that the 10D is a very popular camera, and sells almost as well as the Rebel. He said Canon is NOT planning to discontinue to produce or service this great camera. Now, this is only one Canon employee's opinion, but I felt he was sincere and he seemed informed. So, my hope is that he is accurate! |

They already did, no ?
(I realise you mean an 8Mp DSLR, but I don't think I could consider the 10D consumer :)
It is about due for a 10D replacement sometime soon, probably the 8Mp sensor from the 1D, probably the same crop or a 1.3x and in the 10D body.
I wouldn't bet against it being around for xmas this year.

Chuck Westfall, one of the Canon US managers said at robgalbraith.com's forum that the 10D would stay in production well into 2004. That's what he said 8 or 10 months ago. He only looses credibility if he lied, so I assume he spoke the truth.
Norman Koren said on his site (10D news) that he heard a rumor that the last 10D's could be ordered at the end of march 2004 by the distributors. That's one of the most acceptable rumors I've read.
At Photokina I think that Canon wants to emphasize on the 1Ds replacement and not let that be overshadowed by a 10D replacement. That there will be a new 1Ds at Photokina has been leaked by the same people who said that the 1D Mk2 would be announced at PMA.
Now combine all that and I say: Perhaps a 10D successor before the holidays start, so May or June. That is also in time for the soccer championships and the olympics. It is useless to announce a non-studio camera in the fall.
Not that I care because I will be in Sweden from July 2nd to 20th and have decided to use the 'don't care if it breaks S602' during this camping/mountainbiking/hiking/cityvisiting photography holiday. :)
Ooooooooh, I have to train my fat lazy ass........ 8km @ 27km/h and my legs give up....

So... in English this means that if you haven't bought the 10D, then you will not have a comparable one to buy. The only options will be the dRebel and the 1Ds replacement? Which could mean boo-koo bucks? |

Well, they've gotta let demand pump the 10D reservior dry prior to release of the replacement so as not to stick distributors with remaining stock. The "dry spell" would be pretty short though, prolly not longer than a month. When supplies really do dry up on the 10D, you can bet the replacement is around the corner. But by that time you'll prolly have direct evidence.
It will amaze (but really not shock) me if that does happen this Spring/Summer. A 1-year market life is incredibly short, even for a digital camera. The 10D was just released last March!

Good point. The venerable Canon 1D was announced September 25, 2001 and its replacement has not even hit the streets yet. |
