Well, I'd say it is creativity. What is important here is that the photographers are making active choice that have a fundamental impact on the look of an image. More creative I would suggest than a straight up capture of a scene that doesn't reflect or show the result of such photographic choosings.
Whether it is art or not is it in the dialogue catalyses - intra-personal dialogue as the photographer considers their work - how does it make them feel? How close was it to their intent? What unexpected effects have emerged? Inter-personal dialogue as the sharing and viewing of the work communicates a message and how that message is mediated by the prior experiences of the viewer. And then the dialogue with the wider cultural landscape. Some works are located in and reflect a tradition; interpretation takes place within a context with a history, the work contributes to and enriches a pre-existing whole.
I'm quite aware that all this sounds like self-indulgent nonensense but actually 'mI not an arty type at all, I have no knowledge of art; but I can appreciate that the images people create are not standalone objects but rather they cause, and are themselves reactions, to wider cultural experience. | It was such a great reading till the last paragraph! Pity you added your defensive exit line! I believe you can create art without having the knowledge of art. There are many examples throughout art history.
PS It looks that we are going to continue hijacking Garry's thread. Sorry about that. |

How to create the Mona Lisa:
You take a paint brush, dip it in paint, and smear the paint on the canvas, and hope for the best.
It's not art, it's crafts.
How to decorate the Sistine Chapel:
You take a paint brush, dip it in paint, and smear the paint on the wall, and hope for the best.
It's not art, it's crafts.
I beg to differ. It's art AND crafts. |
Obviously, that comment has no basis in logic. Both of those examples have form and function and must be very precisely done. Even painting an abstract painting takes time and technique. Taking a blurry, abstract picture...not so much. |

And, again, I request a User Block Feature on DPC. Use Arts or Crafts to create it.
I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a User Block Feature today :-)
In the meantime, we can collectively agree not to feed the trolls. |

It's easy to say people you don't agree with are trolls. It's hard to have an adult conversation. Don't cop out so fast. |

And it's a waste of time to try with someone who just wants to argue in thread after thread. |

I don't know if you'd consider the photo below the same sort of thing as the two lovely ones you posted, but mine was done with a macro lens purposefully out of focus. It's the underside of a Phyllotopsis Nidulans mushroom in the wild. So basically it's of a shape I love (mushroom or mushroom gill), and intended out-of-focusing. In post, tone curves were worked like dogs to get the ribbing in the gills to stand out.

Well, my point was emerged from a position that art is socially constructed and that it is just as relevant to non-arty types since we are all participants in a shared (macro)culture. So I don't think you and I disagree. |
