While not up to the standard of other moon shots in this thread--this is from tonight where we observed a large ring around the moon. This exposure was 1/5 second; f3.5; ISO 6400 on a Nikon D300 with 10-24 lens at 10mm-- to give some perspective on how large the ring was! Time was about 10:30PM in Sarasota Florida.

I saw this tonight also but of coarse I'm only a hour and forty five minutes away. The halo effect.

Oooh, it's not often a speed challenge suggestion gets taken up! Quick -- can you suggest a set of Lotto numbers for me to play for this Saturday? ;-)

Probably Langdon didn't want to wait for another 60 years?

If I was that confident in my numbers, I'd have already ordered my D700 :0

I am, however, really looking forward to this challenge and the fact that its expert editing really sets it off... Should be interesting...

According to the article I posted there is a perigee-full moon event every 18-20 years.

I'll be photographing the moon near the horizon on March 19.

Yes, I will. And, the moonset on March 20. And, the moonrise on the evening of March 20. Forecast is mostly clear.

I used 200mm for this shot "Above the Tempest". And, the lens focal lengths for "Moon" were varied. It would be worth studying shot details.

As hahn23 points out well in that picture. It depends on what you want to do with it. The expert editing allows you to make use of a small moon shot. I have made attempts with several cameras at around the equivalent of 300mm and failed to get a shot worth printing on even a 4x6 due to how low in resolution it was.

A 400mm lens especially on a 1.5x or so crop camera would make a decent shot at the moon assuming no cloud cover. Even a 300mm on a cropped sensor aspect would make better attempt than my 200 on 1.5 which is 300 Equiv.

I had a full frame canon body on the 07 DC GTG and someone from here lent me a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS but the clouds where over the moon.

Am I going to need a helmet for this?

In the few shots of the moon that I have attempted they end up with either the moon blown out or all else way too dark. I have looked at the Moon challenge pics and there seem to be good images with exposures all over the board. I will certainly try some more this weekend, but for me getting the right exposure is going to be a crap shoot. Hopefully, crap shoot will not describe my results.

It's expert editing so take multiple shots to get what you need and combine them.

The full moon is "fully" illuminated by the sun, so use (approximately) the same exposure(s) you would for a daytime landscape. To get details on the moon's surface, you will probably have an exposure too short to show any stars. You pretty much have to use manual exposure, unless your camera's spot-metering is extremely accurate and samples a very small area; all the dark sky around the moon throws off any other metering.

If you take a shot right around moon-rise, there may be enough residual twilight to capture some foreground detail while still getting a good exposure for the moon.

So i wouldn't be fine with what i currently have as a lense? (just look at my profile page)

The 28-300? On a T1i should be what equiv to 42 to 450? It would be a heck of a lot bigger than anything Ive been able to attempt. But I would question how sharp it will come out on such a zoom. I am assuming your trying to get a big a shot of the moon as possible? You shouldn't answer because it might be a give away lol.

If you have never shot the moon before you will find out its pretty backwards from how you might think. A tripod is a great idea unless its in a position to shoot it prior to sun down which allows for much faster shutter speeds. I havent done it in 2 years but its pretty much infinite focus, good stop down on the aperture. Shoot a range of shutter speeds until you get the exposure you want.

I never posted my slightly better attempts with an SLR. But i believe this was with a 6 MP fuji at equiv of 308

Your 300 (equiv 450) combined with the resolution the T1i gives you and a little post processing should make for a nice moon shoot if I had to guess.
