In defense of all those with lower end digital cameras, my camera does not have a manual focus. So as much as I'd like to change the focus I can't. This makes it really hard to get the focus I want, since the camera decides for me. I can tell that mine is probably one of these since my score is kind of showing it already.
Anyone want to donate to a fund so I can buy a better digital camera... one with focus!?!? |
Does it let you half press the shutter to pre-focus on something, then re-compose ? Some do, some dont. |

LOL. Anyway FYI, i don't use manual focus even though my camera has that capability. 9 out of 10 times i use auto focus. Everything else (apeture, shutter, EV) manually. |

Unless your shot is 100% orange, 'some' people are going to mark you low. I did anticipate that though. :)

For this challenge I shot a lot of subjects which to my eye were orange. Just to find out that the camera somehow turned them yellow or red. I submitted the subject which was unmistakebly orange so I wouldn't be voted down for this reason. |

I guess I should be happy... Less than 50% of my picture is orange and my score is a little above 5. I wasn't expecting to score very well in this one but I do like my shot. |

I think my entry is good too but apparently others don't. Oh well.

Ditto... oh well. There's still a week to go. My scores always seem to improve over the weekend :) Good luck again to all! |

I have to say that I should also defend those of us with lower end digital cameras. Mine lets me half press the button to focus and then re-compose which helps a lot in creating nice lighting effects. However it doesn't help when you get some comments that say it would have been better if I had changed certain settings which I can't change.
Here's hoping for a pay rise and, therefore, a better camera!!!! ;) |

You work with what you have. You know the limits of the camera and you know if it's a good shot to you, which is often the more important part. I won more ribbons here with my 1.9mp limited camera than I have with my dSLR. I learnt a lot trying to find creative ways around my limitations. Some people comment on images expecting the quality to be from a veteran professional with the best equipment.

Was just about to post something along the same line! Anyway in general, point-and-shoot cameras work their best under natural light. Work with what you have! |

I'm not doing any better with a better camera. Still receiving average marks. That said I don't regret buying a better camera. If for nothing else personal satisfaction and the fact that it offers more flexibility, especially with interchangeable lenses.

I think you can post them into a forum of your own, someone else just did this similar thing. Check the Community Forum titiled, "B&W or Color Portraits."

Does anyone bother to read past the title of the challenge here?
Quote:
"Orange is defined as "any of a range of colors between red and yellow.""
Surely this is saying the the image could primarily contain any shade of orange from nearly yellow to nearly red. I have received three sarcastic comments accusing my image of being yellow, when it plainly contains shades of orange through to yellow.
Oh well.... |

I think people are voting on what orange means to them, not necessarily what the challenge outline states, maybe on a sub-concious level or maybe they are just un-concious. ;p)

Amen...amen...
Oh, and no. I have no half focus, no aperture or shutter control. I'm infact just glad that mine actually takes pictures and doesn't make fries instead.
But you're right, you use what you got. It's made me half to work around what limitations my camera has. I do try and do natural light more often, and my highest scores have actually been outside. I'm guessing my camera is just not good enough for studio work. |

Yeah i read the challenge, this part in particular "See how creative you can be in composing an interesting shot where orange is the primary color..."
Primary color, as in main color, the most of any color in the pic, etc. |

Mine is orange, but really does look red. I had just a few minutes to post process and upload, decided to unsubmit, (but couldn't -- lost connection), then tried to upload the one I wanted to submit (that really does look orange, I promise!!), but ran out of time!
lesson learned? don't wait until the last minute to upload!!! |

Exceerpt from 'Idiot's Guide to Photo Contests' - The picture not entered was the better picture. |

White isn't a color, so if a shot has white and orange, orange is the primary. *shrugs*
I've dropped from 5.7 to 5.4 with 60 votes. Yay.

I am usually very loose with what constitutes art, but I'm also noticing a lot of toys as the subject. It seems they are kind of just photographed like a snapshot instead of a work of art. A couple were good, but the majority of those toy images look really thrown together. I thought the caliber of images in parallel lines was very good, it seems this particular challenge has a lot less interesting interpretations of the challenge description. Don't get me wrong though -- there are several absolutely stunning images in this bunch. Just noticed more than normal amount of non-artistic submissions. |

Oh, and if you're not sure, just having something red or orange sitting next to you at your computer while voting. Put it up next to the thing on your screen...I just did that to test mine here at school, where the monitor is calibrated differently than mine at home.

If the color comes close to a shade of orange, I will give the photographer the benefit of the doubt and not vote down because of it. However I may mention it in my comments if I don't really think it looks orange.

I was going to enter a shot from my Grand Canyon hike, that had some great shades of orange, but I figured it wouldn't be orange enough for some here. I'm glad I didn't submit. |

I'm doing that too... I'm not marking photos down because they don't look orange enough. But I think that there should be a considerable amount of orange in the photo, or orange should be the color that pops at least...

Is anyone finding that some of the submissions are TOO ORANGE? I, personally, am not put off by this, but I'm wondering if some people are...?
