I think this might be a low scoring challenge for everyone. I think it is really hard to do a photograph like this and make it look right. I saw a lot of good attempts and a few really successful photographs. But for the most part, I think someone looking at this challenge would say, "hey where is the other half of the picture?"
Obviously with a score now around 5.4, people are wondering where the other half of my picture is to vote on. :) |

Sure why not add insult to injury? I'm under a 5 now, myself.

(I actually liked the challenge. I thought a number of the shots were effective. Haven't voted yet.)

lol I am right there with you Julianne - except maybe yours is doing better than mine. I actually thought this was a DPC friendly shot. Oh well... learn something new every day.

This is a difficult challenge to successfully accomplish. Obviously, I missed, as every vote now takes the average lower. One excellent comment gives me hope I didn't miss completely. There will likely be another 150 votes. All is not lost. |

My photo is bombing in a way that I can only call epic. And the sad thing is, I knew it would. LOL. Also, that is the good thing, because I am learning to understand the difference between what constitutes a good photo and bad one. I way overprocessed, and have the funniest comment I have received to date on a pic.
The only way to gain good judgment is by having the experience of bad judgment.

It would be good if voters knew the difference between focus & shallow depth of field when viewing a submission

You mean like this image of mine where I purposely wanted a shallow DOF on only the middle section of the keys and knobs only to have my first comment be "You could have focused better"! LOL.
I agree...it's been a pet peeve of mine here as well for quite some time. The image might not be THE most interesting image in the world, but I liked it and it deserved better than a 5.0 IMO. Anyway, because of situations like this I don't often submit shallow DOF shots because I'm with you...a lot of people just don't get it.

Shallow DoF is one thing. But when the main focal point of the image is not in that DoF, then to me the image is out of focus. It's a fine line and depends on very clearly putting your point of interest in that plane of focus.
Dave, I'd have absolutely no issue with your image and the shallow DoF...as it's clear you're using the DoF to focus the eye to a particular part of the keyboard. |
