Hi all!

I am on the market for a new digital. I really want a digital SLR, but I am unsure of my funds. I think I have about 6 or 7 hundred to spend on a new one. I could put it on the card, but I just really don't want to get myself in debt. I really want to get the rebel. I am now a die hard canon fan due to a recent backpacking trip I went on. Dropped my PowerShot A80 60ft down a cliff and it landed in a large pile of sharp rocks. The crazy thing still works like a charm. Looks a little rough and had to substitute a thumb tack for the shutter botton, but everything stills works fine! I'm still amazed!!!

But I decided to get serious about getting a new camera. So if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I am going to look at some this afternoon.

Thanks much!

I upgraded from an A70 to a 300D, and I'm sure you'll be as pleased as I am with mine.

Bear in mind that buying the camera is only a proportion of the cost. I've already spent about the same again (£1000) on lenses and other bits and bobs.

That said - if you're a little short now, it's worth saving for, if you can wait.

with $600-700, I'd go for the Canon G5 otherwise keep saving for a digital SLR :))

I am truly amazed. And when it fell, the lens was out. I definitely recommend it for outdoor rugged use.

PaulMdx,
How much did you pay for the Rebel? (if you don't mind my asking)
And did it come with a lens?

I think the rebel sells for $900 (body only) and $1000 (w/ 18-55mm kit lens). You would still need to buy a memory card, but that would get you started.

If you want something less expensive, you are out of the DSLR market unless you can find something used.

If you are at all interested in the Canon G5, I am planning to sell mine along with the lens adapter, some filters, a small bag, and a small tripod. I was going to put it on ebay, but if you are interested, please PM me.

have a look at the nikon d70...a competitor on the level of the rebel and might have some advantages (from what i've read). i just bought one and am waiting for delivery...$999 for camera, $1299 with decent lens.

just a tiny canon counterpoint...

I bought a Powershot G5 as a backup to the Digital Rebel (purchased at the same time). It's a very good camera, but not all that different from your skydiving A80. You'll need to save up for the Rebel, but look for sales at OfficeDepot, Dell, Sears, etc. and you can often save $100 or more off list. I got the Rebel with kit lens during a 10% off electronics sale at Sears and had an additional 10% employee discount (immediate family) for $829 total. In your case, I'd save a little more for a well-cushioned camera bag. ;-)

Paulmdx got his 300D in UK so not fair to compare as our prices are higher... But the 300D will need a parachute :-)

Bear in mind the kit price for the 300D -- useful lens the efs, you can get more lenses later (And look on ebay to save a lot...)

Wait for a firmware rev on the d70 to see if they can correct color shift and moire.

Other than that Oly will be releasing a cheaper e-system camera in a little bit, with $200 you can get equiv zoom of 36--400 in 2 sigma lenses for that.

Don't forget that you will also need at least one lens and a CF card. Both of these items will add a significant amount to the cost of the Rebel.

B&H Photo has a Digital Rebel package for $1,209.95.

No the A80 takes cf, so not needed unless Brett never took pictures with the A80.

I want to see the picture of the camera with thumbtack as shutter.

That would be new to me :)

I'd recommend some sort of fixed lens camera, rather than a DSLR.

There's the new canon S1 pro, or the Sony 8Mp cameras. Anything in that sort of range will be close to your price range, give fantastic performance.

Something like the drebel from Canon really costs a lot more than the base price and will not perform that well with cheap lenses - I think you'd be better off with a 'closed' system.

Sony F717 for $599.99 or shop around you may be able to find it a bit cheaper.
