Okay guys, I scored roughly $400 for my birthday and my question is which lens should I get... My choices are either this

55-300mm $359.99

Or This

70-300mm $519.99

Now I can add the roughly $160.00 to get the more expensive lens, but money for me doesn't grow on trees and I'm wondering if it was worth it, and what benefit the 70-300 may have of the 55-300. I don't understand allot of the lingo and the only thing I could see was that the focus ring was in a different spot. Anyway, just wondering which I should go... THanks in advance...

Great info... thanks... Since I'm pretty much going for action shots, looks like I'll drop the cash for the 70-300mm

Per Mr. Rockwell...

"As of October 2010, Nikon's 70-300mm VR isn't much more expensive, and is a far superior lens which focuses almost instantly, and offers almost instant manual focus override."

Sounds like what I'm looking for :) THanks again

70-300mm price tag is rightly justified for several reasons:

Better Build Quality
Compatibility with FX bodies (i.e. potentially longer life in your kit)
IF (internal focusing....front element does not rotate when focusing)
SWM ring-drive (full manual focus override without flipping a switch)

From reviews I've seen, the optics seem to be fairly close.

Good luck.

Nikon_Nikkor reviews

This is the site I use for my Nikon/Nikkor decisions. In depth and accurate.
The left side of the page has links for lenses - open and scroll for your information. Lots to learn.

eta: no part of your equipment arsenal is more important than your lenses. Your lenses ability to capture light is the single most important element in photography.

I picked up the 70-300mm in October and all technical lingo aside it's sick. I love it. At the lower end of the range it seems sharper than my 50mm. It's extremely versatile and as Michael said, it's a full-frame lens, so there are no regrets if you ever go full frame. It's definitely worth the extra expense.

And you mentioned action shots. I'm no action photographer (mostly landscapes), but here's a shot from last week that was so easy with this lens it nearly took it itself.

Well, one final update... I got my lens like 4 weeks ago, and my second challenge entry with it was this shot...

and BooYah!!! My first ribbon... So special thanks to all who replied to this thread, especially those who pushed me towards the better glass :P In all seriousness though, you really can see a difference in the overall quality. I shot that entire Renaissance fair with that lens and am really impressed by the quality of this lens...
